I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

Just had interviews with them (eu-office) and only had market-related cases...
On a related note: how are associates seen that are ‚tied’ to a practice such as M&S?
Interviews are the same for all tracks (though they will try to have partners from the marketing & sales practice interview you if possible). I had a utilities and aerospace / defense case!!
R1 I’m not sure what you mean by your question? They are seen the same as generalists except that you do a portion of your work dedicated to your practice and therefore get a bunch of extra training and development earlier in your tenure.
Thank you! Both makes sense, I guess it’s a matter of priority here, it’s more likely to get interviews by people within those practices, but also has the possibility of getting others outside the practice.
I recently interviewed and know 2+ folks who also interviewed across different practices. What I know from perosnal experience doesn't align with what you will hear here. Majority of the cases that I (and my contacts) got were focused on the practise. If there is truly no internal guideline on this, I think this happens more so because your interviewers are from the specific practice and are more comfortable with cases around that practice.
End of the day you need to decide how you will practice based on what you hear from different folks, but I would suggest you brush up a few common case types specific to your practice as well
EDIT - BTW, THIS DOESN'T MEAN YOU SHOULD SKIP ANY CASE TYPE. JUST FOCUS ON PRACTISE RELATED CASES
It has nothing to do with who is comfortable with cases. It has to do with interviewer availability. First round interviewers are usually more junior folks who are provided specific cases to give and will NOT be practice specific in many cases. Second round they try to get partners from your practice but it totally depends on availability.
