Whoever’s hiring.
Client. Much more stable and more $ to quickly save in case you do get laid off
There’s a lack of conceptual thinking but that’s compensated for in dollars
Rising Star
Client side is only SLIGHTLY more stable. The first internal department a brand will cut is always marketing / creative. Always.
A furlough is basically a layoff. At the earliest I'd be brought back in 2021....
Client, the amount of overhead I’m paying to agencies is outrageous and I’m not getting anything I couldn’t get from a freelance art/copy team.
^ Real shooter energy going off anon to take that shot 👏👏👏
Go wherever you feel comfortable.
I can’t imagine myself in a corporate world in the client side. But I know there are lots of people that want and need that kind of structure.
I’m all for trying to do the best and most creative work in the world. This is not a 9 to 5 for me, it’s a mission.
And I know client side would never offer me that.
I don’t always do email newsletters, paid social, banners and iterate on important KPIs, but if I do, I do it at client side.
Moved client side and never been happier.
I’m very thankful for the agency life and grind that taught me to flex work ethic, high standards and to be a one-person army + connections.
But now I enjoy work life balance and seeing my work put out and have an impact. Will it win at Cannes? No, and no one cares. (That said, what makes it at Cannes is great and inspiring but you don’t have a gun pointed at your head client-side to win - they care about actual data-proven growth, not trophies)
We’re all aligned towards the same goal, we have stock options, and the culture is amazing. Leaders are kind, listen and aren’t afraid of changing their ways.
Not saying all brands are like that but what bothered me the most agency-side was unrealistic expectations, misalignment between departments (amazing work but in 3 days with no budget), and agency and client (awards vs performance), not to mention an expiry date for talent (early 40s?).
I’m fine to play the game but when everyone has different goals, it’s a real mind f that leads to frustration, mediocrity and burnout.
Yeah, do tell!
Freelance. Sole proprietor
It all depends on which agency and which brand. Spotify over Publicis? Of course. Verizon over WK? Not unless it’s purely for the money. Not as simple as client side vs agency if you still want to make work that interests you. And if you don’t, you might as well be in another industry.
I have a *pension plan*. Client for sure.
Client
Client side. You either took the hit or didn't.
Agency side, everyone took the hit.
