Pumping / breastfeeding moms - what do you do if you’re asked to be out of town/state for several days to a week due to depositions or a trial?? I’ve seen people on here talk about the company milk stork but (1) it seems like that only works for oversuppliers (I produce only enough for each day); (2) how do you handle not being with your baby for days or a week from an emotional perspective; and (3) how do you handle evening childcare with another working spouse and no local family support?

I always just said I had a familial obligation I could not move and was unable to travel during that time. This period of time in your life is so temporary - if you can, it’s completely fair to see if another can travel in your stead.

How old is baby? Honestly it depends on your relationship with your team. It’s difficult to come back and reintegrate after maternity leave and things are so much more difficult because as a mom you have to now account for all the logistics and demands of having and taking care of a baby.

When my son was 7 months I had to go on a 5 day conference. I felt I couldn’t say no because it would look bad given that I was reintegrating and the work wasn’t coming as much as before mat leave.

I used the stork service and mailed back a box everyday. I did have a small freezer stash and there’s also mom groups where local moms are willing to donate breastmilk for babies so that could be an option if you are stressed about not having enough for when you have to be away.

Being away from baby is hard but part of what being a working mom is. I FaceTimed a lot during my conference. We also didn’t have much support so we had to get a sitter to assist while I was out. It is difficult preparing for the trip and being away but if you are in this profession you still need to make it work and saying no will absolutely affect your career progression because you will no longer be staff-able.

(1) say you can’t go for medical reasons relating to your baby; or
(2) bring your baby.

I am aware of plenty of lawyers who have said they cannot travel for more than a day or two while they are still nursing. This is a completely reasonable request.

Also, I still refuse to travel for more than a couple of nights away from my children, and they are in elementary school. It’s just not something that I’m comfortable with as a parent. Every family is different.

My husband took time off work to bring my kids with me on all business trips for like 4 years, and is coming with my to a firm retreat next week. This means that we take fewer vacations at other times, because of the expense and because he has used a lot of leave. But, my kiddos are used to a lot of face time with me, and I do bedtime most nights. My partner is front and center, he could not be more supportive. But, I still have hard boundaries when it comes to making sure that I have enough time with my children. I’m more than 10 years out and I currently work in BigLaw.

Decide what you think is best for you and your family, and I believe you can make it work .

When I was faced with this issue, I took my baby (and a family member to provide care) with me.

You might want to consider hiring one or two nannies to support you on-sire.

In my case, I fed my baby between snack breaks and meals.

I completely understand that it might not work in your circumstance, but it is an option that can work.

Additional question - is it fair to say you cannot be away from baby for a week due to milk supply and lack of childcare?

Thanks so much for this advice - very helpful!

I pump and dump, but have only been away four days at a time, and usually time it so it’s only two days with redeye flights. But I’m also fortunate because I have a good supply, so have a few months of milk frozen. My husband picks up the slack when I’m gone.

Although I’m about to be gone almost every week across the country this next month, and since baby is almost 11 months old and I’m winding down breastfeeding now anyways (she’s eating a lot of solids), I’m thinking of just stopping and using up the stash. Because pumping and dumping stinks!

As a note my firm offers milk stork but I don’t use it because it seems like such a hassle and depositions and oral arguments are stressful enough. But I’ve heard good things from those that used it.

I pumped, kept the milk in the hotel fridge, then brought it all back in a cooler bag on the plane. Breastmilk can make it through TSA. I traveled a month after returning to work when my baby was 5 months and was glad for the time away but that was just me. My husband shares the childcare load pretty evenly and just dealt with it because my career matters too. I have friends who will hire local high school kids to help for a few hours before bedtime.

Hey all! I’m 30 years old. About to close on a house with a 5.75% fixed 30 yr mortgage. If you were me and your goal was to maximize your net worth by retirement, would you put a few thousand dollars extra into paying down the house faster or invest that extra money in the market? The 5.75% doesn’t feel that low but also not crazy high so I’m torn. Thoughts? 🙏
