Gen X is way closer to Millennials than Boomers in wants, ideals, and how corps SHOULD run. Holding corps were already long in affect when we came into the industry. And we hated them as much then as we do now.
We were talking about unionizing in 2000 when we were forced as juniors to work 100 hrs weeks regularly.
Unfortunately, just like now, nothing will come of it.
And what’s worse is that at least the industry was fun up until 2010. Now though? There’s zero positives about this industry
Didn’t even notice. And I always had work. And I used to go see movies during the day.
It was horrible-we all saw what’s happening now coming but we thought it would take years not decades
Lost generation here…it was always coming but post-Covid accelerated the holding company takeover. Some agencies were able to hold out during the 2010’s but they were the profitable ones. If a holding company ever saw an agency flailing…they pounced and took over. Now it’s not even a choice. There definitely used to be a good ol’ days. Agency life isn’t what it used to be unfortunately. We all hate the holding companies…but they pay the bills.
Gen X reporting for duty here.
Getting acquired meant getting rich. Life changing wealth for founders and execs. So it was part of the game plan. You might have to deal with some boring network clients but that meant high margin adaptation work. Holdcos as cost cutters is a more recent development.
Acquisition happened all the time. Entire agencies were made from acquired indies. TBWA is Chiat Day plus BST plus BDDP plus Simons Palmer.
This has been happening since the 80s. Few people in the business today would ever remember an indie period.
