Yes. I know many, many people who moved into UX/UI from different roles. Plus, you now have Bootcamps and Degree Programs cranking out UX and UI designers every year. Meanwhile, Design has been hit particularly hard by layoffs in the last few years and the competition for what few jobs are out there is fierce. I know junior designers who haven't managed to land a single interview after applying to jobs for months. Even with years of experience, finding a job is difficult.
I honestly don't know how someone who specifically identifies as a UI Designer can get a job right now. Every job I see requires either significant UX Design experience (coupled with UX Research and UI experience). Or, it requires Visual Design (with UI experience). I never see jobs that put UI Design as the core required discipline.
Thanks for detailed reply. That was my concern. While I can do a bit of UX I don’t love it compared to the design side (very right brained), and figured with all the online schools and people stranding both sides it would most likely be pretty saturated.
By the way, I would suggest if you say you prefer UI to start researching and looking into other terms to describe yourself. For example, motion design, animation, interaction design, visual design, illustration - with a bunch of these skills under your belt you can niche on the UI side, though overall I would say that generalists are more in demand right now.
Yes because too many people come into this field thinking UX and UI are the same and that’s all they focus on.
You both are correct. Lol. The market is frustrating and companies are cutting down hiring budgets
Ux and Ui are different roles
Yup, got that
I've never had a job where I did one or the other, I've always done both. And yes, with ten years experience, unfortunately the job market is the worst I've ever seen right now.
