Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

Interviewing for a job somewhere else then using that as leverage
I was early into my apprenticeship training when I was told by my journeyman trainer there are 5 facts to what we do.
1. You will never get your true value in wages working for someone else because they only employ you to make money off of you.
2. Yearly raises/bonuses are only provided to keep employees from requesting raises when they deserve them.
3. The new hire budget always exceeds the retainer budget because employers know people hate the unknown variables that come with change.
4. If you take pride in your job and do it as if it were your own profits at stake you will be missed if you decide to leave for better money.
5. Companies have always carried on as though no matter who you are or what you do you are replaceable without trying to acknowledge that they too are just as replaceable. Keep in mind that you were looking for an employer when you found this one.
I feel has not only have all these been proven true but extremely useful in getting better wages for my labors in the 30 years I've been in the trade, That being said 18 of those years have been with a company I'm not currently with because loyalty isn't valued the same as profit margins so every so often I've had to prove my value through absence by working elsewhere. Eventually a former coworker has always reached out to me, at the request of the company, to see if I would be open for discussions about returning and the new hire budget is then available.
3% is not a promotion.

If someone told me I was being promoted with a 3% raise I would laugh in their face thinking that was a joke. Then I would immediately find a new company to work for
I agree with Director 1. I would probably start gathering offers and try to use them as leverage. That is a long time to be working somewhere and only be getting 3% raises.

Yes - it’s a hard job market out there it seems. I’ve been applying. No one has reached out to me yet.
3% is barely COL. Promotion should be 10% or better, depending on the company and increased responsibilities of the new position.
Mentor
My boss makes it out that 3% is high and it’s hard to get higher than that.
Step 1: Find a job elsewhere. 3% is an insult.
Mentor
Definitely trying for sure.
Think of it this way, management is only given a certain percentage to give employees. So you may get 3% but it might be out of 10% the other 7% is probably being divid up with your coworkers. That was how it was at one of my jobs.
Mentor
That’s actually kinda crazy. But I can see that being a factor.
Leave for greener pastures (and more money) and if you actually miss the place, boomerang back and re-enter at a much higher base and/ or title
Mentor
I hope to get a new job at a better company soon. We’ll have to see.
What has kept you there for 18 years? After almost 2 decades at that rate, your salary must be pretty significantly behind market value, is it not? It wouldn't hurt to start job hunting.

I’m able to wfh and health insurance is good and covers my kids. I also really enjoyed my team at the time. It has changed recently and my boss will be retiring in about 2 years. So it’s going to change more. I’m applying to other jobs, but not landing.
Yup I was at a company like this before
Mentor
Sounds like you’re happier at a different new company.
For reference, many people I know change jobs externally and get 15 to 30% more every 2 or 3 years...3% each year is falling behind but we all choose our path.

I’ve been applying for over a year, but no one wants to hire me 😞
