Here's my take. There will always be a competitive advantage, like:
- mom/dad/uncle/etc. who is a partner at B4.
(Recently heard a story of an average (emphasis on Average) student hired by Deloitte because mommy was a Partner at EY, not for merit.
- Alma mater or Greek siblings who work at a place.
- Networking with career or cultural orgs like ALPFA (yes, that's a huge advantage. Got an interview at Amazon when I applied through ALPFA meanwhile always rejected if did it on my own).
- Affirmative Action
Grades and Merit alone are very hard to guarantee career growth. There will always be an edge.
I personally had to become a contractor for EY first and take me 8 years and an MBA letter to become a manager. Good old elbow grease. But if others can climb because of anything else that helps them get there... more power to them.
Our job is to facilitate those opportunities to our fellow Hermanos y Hermanas so we can make it a level playing field for nuestra gente.
No doubt. There is always that extra that we have to do. I feel like every time people talk about affirmative action as if all we have to do is have a pulse to be accepted anywhere. It’s so exhausting to have to continue to walk into places and the first thing that is assumed is that we are the token minority person. We definitely work hard and have earned all that we have.
I agree, McK1. It’s so divisive and of course no one is looking at the system or the many ways URMs have to fight for equity, even in higher ed. They just look around and see the PoC who “are taking their place.” It’s so toxic.
