Really burning out as a corporate attorney at my f500 company. I only work about 50 hours a week — but everything is super urgent, clients are usually clueless, and I often work on 10+ different matters a day. Total comp is ~$250k (~$200k base + 25% bonus). 2017 grad — 4 years biglaw, 4 years in house. Is all this normal? Wondering if it’s worth pursuing another job.

It's worth looking but it is unfortunately common in-house. I'm on in-house role 6 (went straight in-house after law school), and 4/6 places I've worked have operated like a constant fire drill.

The commonality in the two places I've been where things weren't constantly urgent is a great manager who advocates for their team, has taught the business boundaries, and also has a good relationship with business leadership to get help in enforcing those boundaries.

Comp seems low (but not unreasonably low). I'm C/O 2021 and make $225k + 20% bonus (no stock). Securities counsel. The no stock I find grossly not market in you or my comp but I get nowhere on that...

What is PwC India for you?
It's a Big4 but will lowball you during offer negotiation.
It will ask you to work on multiple projects but will hardly appreciate or value your work.
They will ask you to come to the office on Sunday for business critical work and won't give any cab or food facilities.
You will be involved in multiple extra work, which you normally don't do in other service based companies. But there is no benefits/perks for that, you just end up doing extra work!!

Anyone going to the security/privacy conference in DC this week?

My background is in tech transactional. I joined a cybersecurity SaaS startup at the end of last year and now also handle more generalist matters in addition to all things commercial-related. I have a number of books on contracts that I’ve found super helpful over the years (The Tech Contracts Handbook, A Manual of Style for Contract Drafting, Sign Here, etc.). Can anyone recommend books they’ve found helpful for L&E matters, privacy matters, product matters, or marketing/advertising matters?

NFW- I just had a good laugh. Earlier today I was on a video conference call reviewing a Private Label Agreement template with a larger company who wishes to brand label products we develop and manufacture. We came to a very one-sided provision and my sales VP stated “for this one, how can we just say ‘hell no’ ...nicely?” The other person on the call said we can replace the wording with just NFW (no f@$* way) and I said “I will have to add that to the defined terms section so it’s clear”

I’m in discussions to become the GC of a mid size but international company that does ~$1 billion in annual revenue. Smallish legal department. They’ve asked for my comp expectations. Considering taking a position with a small-cap in the US trying to build their legal department. The title is standard “counsel” although the work would be with the senior leadership team and reporting to the GC in Europe. How reasonable is it to ask for a bump in title - Senior counsel or Head of Legal, US? If it matters, I am a 6th year and have been told that I will be expected to hire a junior or paralegal as we build up.
