Really thinking about going back to freelancing. Mid to Sr. Creative in LA here. If my target annual salary is 90-105k, what would should I charge for freelance work? Been a while...

Always account for downtime/added expenses (health, desk rentals, etc...) increase your hourly by about 30%. I'd look up average rates in the West coast but out here in the east, you could likely start at 60-75.

like

Also, if you think you can swing it, charge more so you don't actually have to work 40/hrs/wk or can cover for slow weeks or months. I shoot for $100/hr. If they ask for a project fee I generally base it on $150/hr. If they ask for hourly I get between $60-80, so it tends to average out to around $100.

like

And with all this advice, keep in mind that it depends on the going rate in the market you're in, the saturation of other freelancers, and other factors. Coz there's no way a mid-senior is gonna get $100/hr in places like Omaha or Minneapolis but in LA that's totally feasible.

like

Math time. There's approx 2,000 hours in a year, so you divide 105,000/2,000 (or 105/2, simplified). Or as a shortcut, half of your annual figure is your hourly figure - half of 90 is 45 and half of 105 is 52.5, so your hourly rate is $45-$53.

like

Want to take vacation? Need some flex if you don't get hired right away? Need insurance? Your hourly should be at least $100/hr and your day rate should reflect $700-800/day minimum.

like

If you're making 90-105 now you need to charge 110-125. Freelancers get more an hour because they don't have the benefits and job security. They are hired in a pinch and the agency is willing to shell out the bucks and bonus that they don't have to give you benefits. Every hiring department knows this, so If you charge your staff rate as a freelancer, you will screw yourself if and when you ever want to convert to full time at the agency you are freelancing at because they are going to offer you roughly 15% less than they were paying you as a freelancer.

like

Not creative, but the heather lafevre planner survey has a freelance section where you can see hourly rates and how that correlates to yearly $. Useful reference. If you don't want full time you prob need $700-800 day rate

like

That said. Take 1/2 of those golden paychecks and throw it in savings.

like

These seem about right. When I started freelancing right out of school I was charging 500/day in NY. So maybe you could even aim higher? But @ACD1 has a good point about charging more for additional expenses.

Also, I have an idea of what I should be compensated in this type of role, but any insights on how they pay compared to others would be helpful. My current consulting role is not - so this would be new.

It’s hard to be motivated when rounds of layoffs happen and you see all your friends leave. But one thing that’s gotten me through all of this is working out. And when I say workout I mean the most pathetic, sad, barely completed beginner-level cardio dance routines.
