Hopefully you can get into a manager role and start putting an end to that to yield more efficiency. Extending the work day you can probably cut a few fte.
I work six months on such schedule. I was so burnt out and miserable. I took a vacation and never return. I need work life balance.
I boomeranged…but when I went to industry on my first day they asked what I wanted my schedule to be —- standard was 8-4:15 but as long as you are there 9-2 you can choose any 7.75 (+30 min for lunch) period. Many did 6-2:15 or 730-345 or whatever worked for their schedule. If both spouses worked they usually stagger so one could get the kids off to school and the other be there when school got out.
Yes- the salty comments here are ridiculous. I went to industry 14 years ago- best decision ever. Hardly ever do over 40, and was recently promoted to manager. $150k plus a large bonus. The partners on here commenting lunches aren't necessary are the problem in accounting. Change your ways!
SM1 - what type of role do you have? And HCOL/MCOL/LCOL?
That's why responses and promotions are slow as well
How slow are we talking?
Crazy that some people actually sound salty about this
Definitely lots of salt.
Left top 10 PA as a Senior in Audit and received two promotions in two years within industry for the same company. Take the full lunch everyday but keep the grind - you’ll go far with a much better W/L balance. Advice for you: keep your connections in PA as your networking will prove paramount to keeping up to date with new accounting standards the higher you climb the corporate ladder.
One month into industry and I’ve gained a higher title, a pay bump, and most importantly balance with my family. I’m feeling more valued than I ever did in Big 4. It’s wild what appreciation can do. Easily the best career move I’ve made.
Same. F prestige.
Is the pay decent? I’m wondering if the grass truly is greener on the other side
Glad to hear that!! Good luck!
Or you take a full hour of lunch. Come in at 9:30 and leave at 4:30 like people do at my job outside of Q and year ends. 😂
Have you been there long enough to see month-end/quarter-end close yet? There may be some variability to that balance (still better than public though!)
This 🙌🏼 I recently made the switch too and life is good in industry! Most of my team leaves by 4pm 😂
Same here same here.
Good for you. Some parts of Big4 life is just too much - feel foolish sometimes telling friends and family why I have to cancel plans or holidays. We normalise it 'for clients' but it is a bit messed up.
Once you go industry you’ll never go back
Welcome to the brighter side of life. All through my career, I have always taken my 1hr lunch breaks.
whats the pay tho
Happy for you to find that balance. I often think about the balance in industry, but find myself fearing boredom. I did a stint as loan staff with a large team backfilling for a clients tax department a few years ago. It was a four month engagement. Our team operated much differently than the client. We were more efficient and technical, and the work became somewhat boring intellectually.
Of course, that is probably also me sipping the kool aid a bit. I’ve been able to find better WLB in my current group and at a director position that allows me flexibility. But it’s still big 4 hours and doesn’t measure up to industry.
If you found a position that offers you the flexibility while giving you fulfillment, then that’s awesome! I think you found something we all strive for
I had 3000+ hours a year in industry for 2 years. Went back to B4 for better hours.
If worked in industry and public and it really depends on the employer. Some industry jobs are like a year round busy season including working Saturdays. Unsustainable. Quickly leads to burnout.
What are industries that are sane
You would be surprised. Some industries just log off at 4
Can you give tips on how you switched ? Recruiter are telling me it’s next to impossible to switch without a cpa and I should stay in public.
It’s not impossible but it’s harder it’s a employer market right now. Get your cpa and increase the amount of roles you qualify for.
