Boundaries
From my experience, I wish I had developed stronger negotiation skills earlier in my career. Effective negotiation can significantly impact deals, relationships, and outcomes, which are crucial in the world of private equity. Learning to navigate and negotiate effectively can make a substantial difference in achieving successful outcomes for both parties involved.
Saving so I could retire way earlier.
Focus less on the technical details and learn to delegate those tasks to nerdy or techie types while I focus on PMO and sales and move up the ladder quicker.
Yes!!!! It is unbelievable how below average operations/PM like people capitalize on technical leads’ outputs and move up extremely quickly… while techies continue their daily grinds to prove that they can deliver MORE complex projects.
Project management and getting others to buy into it.

Be work smart, not book smart LOL
Can’t move ahead of you keep looking at the rear view mirror. It’s never too late to start. You have seen people built lasting company that started at age 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. So, I really don’t think about what I should have done because that are a lot of things I should have (done, learned etc). Nowadays, I just work towards what I want (realistically).
I let someone else tell me how to grow my career instead of seeking out challenges on my own. I was more talented and efficient than he deserved or acknowledged. I didn’t make him pay me my worth bc I was afraid to leave.
Now at Salesforce I’m treated like a rockstar. Bc I am.
I also learned that exercise makes my life better. Wish I knew that at 21.
Storytelling
Some more:
1. Understanding the supply and demand for skillsets within your firm and the overall market. Everyone wants to come up but it’s easier to come up developing skills that are high in demand that most don’t want to or can’t do. Sometimes there just isn’t enough budget to promote a lot of people in saturated areas.
2. Tie yourself to revenue generation and do it in a way that hasn’t been seen before (through creative delivery, tools you created, relationships you capitalized on.)
3. In general be different. Don’t do what others are doing. Think of something that no one is doing and market the value it creates for the client. Be the only person in your team that can deliver that value. This will make you stand out with the partners and also with the client during sales pitches.
