Senior associate that has worked with my current group for three years. Have never had a review or any indication of major problems. I have also repeatedly fixed mistakes by the junior partner (i.e. dealing with bad case law cited in briefs, having to swoop in to meet a deadline that I was told was being handled, etc..) I disclosed I was pregnant a few weeks ago and then suddenly got a review invite where I was told I was not performing at level. No real specific examples provided. Advice?

Make sure you have a record in writing of your telling them you are pregnant.

If you do not have a record, then I would consider some sort of record making email - "As a reminder, and as I shared with Xxx at Xxxx location on Xxx date, I am pregnant with a due date of Xxx. Thank you for congratulating me. As we discussed, I will continue to support my matters until X date before starting the maternity leave that we, and also persons A, B, C discussed at xx, yy, and zzz dates."

And take a photo of it with your phone.

Go to a good employment lawyer now. Some of them are not big fans of suing law firms, but given your presumably high level of compensation, you should be able to find one.

Bonus points if you find one by sending a PTI email to the entire firm on behalf of a “friend.”

Seconding what everyone is saying, plus you should start saving offline evidence of you cleaning up for the other partner, any praise from other partners or clients, basically anything supporting that you are performing well.

One of my friends had to sue her former firm. If you need a recommendation send me a message. They helped her with a pretty good settlement and she was able to land at a better AmLaw firm.

Consult with several plaintiff-side employment lawyers, like Sanford Heisler. It may take several consultations to find the right lawyer.

To help your conversations, make a chronology of your past feedback, when you made your protected disclosure, and feedback and possible retaliation since then.

Also include problematic anecdotes or data about your supervisors or anyone else at this firm that could lay out a hostile work environment, retaliation, or pregnancy/parental discrimination claim.

This could include data re the lack of female partners, pressure to not have children or not take full parental leave (towards men or women), or pushing out young parents.

Hey everyone. I found out we are expecting our first child and I’m really nervous. I got into consulting one year ago and I’m up for promotion this year. With timing of our performance conversations I would have to inform I’m pregnant before outcomes - then shortly after the promotion effective date I would go on a leave for due date. I’ve worked really hard and I’m worried our wonderful news will throw chances with this :(- also if I don’t get promoted pretty sure it’s up or out. Any advice?

Struggling to get work at a free market firm after lateraling. I was very well liked at my prior firm and had high hours so really struggling to understand why folks don’t seem to want to come back to me with more work. For those at free market firms, how frequently do you have to ask for work? How do you typically ask? Just send partners emails asking if they have any deals for you? Thanks y’all.

Do people who take parental leave multiple times as associates get pushed pack on their track to partnership? For example, at a firm with a 8 year track, would a person who took two leaves of six months each have to wait 9 years to make partner?

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school

PSA - We are headed into a self-imposed economic slow down. Now is not the time to lateral but if you do, I would make sure you are at a recession-proof practice or firm. The top law firms will be okay (they always are) but if you are part of a larger group of associates with no work, you are likely to be axed. Latham did it in the 2008 and 2011 and it will happen again. If you are an associate or really anyone but a rainmaker, you are expendable.

I’m have a new theory about why juniors always feel like idiots and wanted to see if anyone else thinks this makes sense. I’m a third year, and am the most junior person all of my teams (generally me, a senior or two, and a partner or two), and I always feel like I’m messing something up. Is this just because I never get to work with other juniors and don’t see the mistakes they make, and that it’s relatively normal? And FWIW I went to HYS and I’ve had a clerkship so it’s not like I’m not smart
