You always wanted to do tech PM.
Didn’t notice you saying you always wanted to do MBB. This feels like a no-brainer.
What’s your best case scenario here? You take the “easy” road where you don’t go back on your word so you work 60-80 hours a week at MBB for 2-3 years, got that slight supervisory promo maybe so you can try to exit into tech PM?
Worked at MBB - I recruited for one office, accepted an offer for a different office halfway though. Then before starting I switched to yet a different system - they didn’t care, you’re just one of hundreds of cogs.
Wasn’t really a target school - so had to go to the office recruiters, but yes.
It’s nice that you’re thinking about reputation, but that doesn’t count at your level. Everyone will move on very quickly.
Laying out all of the data, I think it is a no-brainer. Drop the MBB offer and move to the PM role - why?
1. You - this is what you want. What you’ve always wanted, why take an unnecessary detour?
2. Comp - most times, it’s hard to leave MBB to tech because of comp. You’ve already scaled that hurdle from what you mentioned. You might not get the same opportunity so quickly
3. Layoffs - it may be (slightly) true that the possibility is higher at FAANG, but performance type attrition is built in to MBB in any economy. Don’t forget
4. The work - will be exponentially more interesting as a tech PM than in MBB, trust me
5. Sustainability - depending on which FAANG, you will have much better WLB thank in any MBB
6. You (again) - this might be terrible characterization, but if you’re struggling with this decision in this way, I will highly recommend joining tech and not MBB
7. Other experiences (least important): I have worked on both sides and I really suggest you go with FAANG
Grass is always greener. MBB is the pinnacle of the consulting profession and is recession proof. You can always go from MBB to tech but going from tech to MBB will be difficult
Feel free to renege on the MBB offer. It’s not that deep. Just go for tech
I would renege. Even in all of your worst case scenarios, you got an offer for a job you want more that you’d go to MBB to get (possible to get with MBB, but not as easy as you might think). Go for it!
Gonna bet he / she does not renege especially after the long responses on how they think reneging create ripple effects for their “inner circle” and b school community
Go where the money is. Take the job that pays the most money.
Go do tech PM thing
You can come back to MBB if you don’t like
Whatttt are y’all crazy
Meanwhile it is understandable and you should do the best for yourself be warned that
1. MBB WILL blacklist you
2. They will also report to your university which may get you in trouble (no big problem since you are graduating)
3. They may penalize your school for what you did
The fact you have both options. I’m jelly lol
$80k “more”? What is the total base salary? Or is this an RSU thing?
Disagree that risk of layoffs at FAANG is higher than MBB. Or at least at MBB, the separations are not called layoffs in favor of counseling people out or coaching people to exit before they get counseled out. Overall, I'd say that attrition rates in FAANG, both voluntary and involuntary, are better than in consulting. Even in notorious places like Amazon, the percentage of workers who get PIP'ed is lower than the percentage of people who get counseled out of MBB.
Bruh just renege
Withdraw from MBB, no big deal.
Do it.
Tell them it’s your dream job, an amazing opportunity and what you want to do in your life, and you won’t even have to burn bridges.
Coach
You’re delusional if you think that will prevent them from marking someone as do not hire. The bridge is going to get burned. That’s not up to OP.
No one will care, follow your gut
So I’m hearing less hours and more pay. . .and your ideal position?
TAKE THE DAMN JOB!
PM = product or program manager?
Product
If that’s your dream, go for it. You likely won’t get another offer from that MBB ever again but it doesn’t sound like that’s what you want anyway.
I’ve reneged on an offer before. As long as you’re respectful and honest about your reasoning, you can minimize damage and you’ll be fine.
Get the f*ck out yesterday
Getting into product management is way easier than getting into MBB . Ignore all of these people and take the MBB offer. You will get into tech later anyway. There are undergrads who are product managers at Google.
No it is not..what are y’all talking about. MBB is much more difficult. Lmaoooo
OP, you'd be dumb not to renege
Feel free to ignore, pls check back in in 6 months and let us know if you regret
