Isn’t conventional wisdom that staff attorneys almost never transition to associate positions within BigLaw?
Yes. It is possible, but you have to go thru 2nd class citizen status first. I have one friend who was at Ropes Boston and transitioned to biglaw elsewhere after a year and my sister was a staff atty at a large midlaw firm in the South and recently made partner!!! It is a thing!
Depends on your firm. I’m at a prestig firm and staff attorneys have definitely become associates after 3 or so years after showing promise and quality work (and good firm culture/bosses).
If looking at staff opportunities with the intention and goal to transition to associate, I would make sure that that is a possibility from the beginning. I have seen plenty of attorneys take staff attorney positions, thinking that they would become associates and it never materialized. There are firms that allow for it, just make sure that there is a clear path from the beginning.
