Should leadership roles be given based on experience and tenure, or is it more important to prioritize important leadership qualities, even if it means younger leaders?

Prioritize the leadership qualities. With the said, I feel (personal opinion) we give leadership positions to people we “like”. Old or young, and not always the best leaders.

100%. Leaders don't need to be loved. They need to be respected. If you love them that's great, but leaders should be able to make tough decisions for the better of the whole even if unpopular.

I generally think experience is the best teacher, and the best leaders have been through some things. So that tends to eliminate some of the younger people, despite their educational background or apparent leadership potential. Having said that, if someone demonstrates superior talent, their relative youth shouldn't be held against them.

100%. I think the challenge with jr. people is that they are typically unproven, so putting a jr. person in a position of leadership is very risky. Will the person crumble under pressure? will the person act with integrity? These things usually just come with age and experience.

Combination of experience and leadership qualities, tenure shouldn’t be considered (though theoretically more tenure should mean more experience).

Both are needed to be a good leader in my opinion. You need the skills and the experience to lead a team effectively.

putting someone in a leadership means that people will follow. I think it depends on the scenario. Sometimes people will follow because the person is an SME, knows the org really well and can easily navigate enterprise challenges, or manages to keep the org alive (top revenue contributor, etc.). Don't think there is one rule. I think the key thing to ask is will the people follow and is the person a good steward of the organization.

This trend today of trashing people because they are older in preference to hiring younger, inexperienced but book smart leaders is just plain idiotic. Experience and tenure bring knowledge. Many of the theories taught to your young leaders have already been tried and proven wrong.

Our annual reviews are approaching & one of my direct reports has been with us for almost six years w/ little growth. My reco was to let him go & find a stronger, hungrier & more motivated designer at the same level. However, my boss instead wants us to promote him in hopes that will spark some motivation. I am not behind this decision & have voiced my multitude of concerns in promoting an employee who doesn't deserve it. HR is behind the decision! Thoughts on promoting an undeserving report?

"Everybody can be a leader" some say... "Leaders are nurtured not born" say others... True.

But... this is also true: "not everybody wants to be a leader" (whether they can or can't be). It is a fairly common practice in organizations with traditional career management structures for people to "be promoted" into leadership roles as the "end steps of the corporate ladder" that was climbed doing technical work. And, unfortunately, this doesn't work all the time

After years of hard work, I just got my first position in a leadership role! Yay! I’ll be leading a team of 12.
I wanted to know if you had any tips for me, things you wish you knew before, or things previous leaders did for/to you that you found admirable or stayed with you. I want to make sure I’m there for them and want to be a leader they will remember positively.

Thank you so much!!

I had a great review and a 5.5% raise and a great bonus at my company. But I also got a new Director and a peer manager of mine left the company, so I will be absorbing her team. In addition, my director said I will be receiving 'deep delegation' from them. I don't mind more work, but deep delegation is a new term I've never heard. What does that mean lol?

Heading into 2023, here are some phrases I'm eliminating:

1. "No worries."
2. "No problem."
3. "Sorry to bother you."
4. "Does this make sense?"
5. "Sorry, I'll fix that right now."

Here's what I'm replacing them with: ⤵
1. My pleasure.
2. Of course, happy to help.
3. When you have a minute, can I get your opinion on ____?
4. Does this help you clarify things?
5. Thank you for catching that!
