D2, you may be right about areas outside of Atlanta but that's definitely definitely not for Atlanta and the surrounding suburbs. I grew up in a north Atlanta suburb, we have a concentration of some of the best schools in the country (public schools to add to that). Majority of the people I went to school with are doing just fine in life. You have a selection of great universities -UGA, GT, Emory, etc. as well as instate tuition scholarship. It may not be as exciting as Boston but there's plenty of stuff to do here, lots of outdoors, you're not far from anywhere else (Nashville, Charleston, Savannah, the beach), the climate doesn't blow, and the cost of living is cheap af. It is the south so you'll see some of what d2 was talking about, especially if you go to the more rural places but everyone is incredibly nice and polite. I've visited Boston multiple times and think it's a much prettier and livelier city but the cost of living alone would deter me. Also the weather
I love living in Atlanta and have lived in several big cities around the country. The big thing in ATL is finding an area of town that matches your personality. You could not pay me to move to Buckhead, Brookhaven, or any other suburb. 🤢Areas like Old 4th Ward, Cabbagetown, Decatur all have an awesome vibe, great food / drink options, and more authentic culture. But again, might not be your thing
Boston!
I have relatives in Atlanta. Completely sucks.
If you're planning to have kids, or already have them, consider this: your kids are either going to get educated and become friends with people in rural, misinformed Georgia, or highly educated Boston. Yes, this is a generalization. I grew up in the South, so I understand there are exceptions. However I've had family that have raised kids all over the South, not being from here originally, and a higher percentage of them ended up making poor choices, teenage pregnancies, voting dumb (yes I said it), not going to great colleges (or at all), versus family that grew up in other places who ended up in great colleges, got married in late 20s or early 30s, have careers, etc.
I expect to get bashed by people who feel offended by this, but this kind of stuff is life-altering and I'm going to tell you what's real to give you things to consider. My point is you're going to have to work a lot harder to overcome the environment in the South.
Boston. ATL sucks
ATL. It sucks but not as much as BOS.
OP, a lot of the hate in this thread for Atlanta is from people who don't know intown Atlanta. I live here, in Inman Park, Atlanta's best neighborhood. I got a 4 bedroom house for 580k. I've got 18 4-star (Yelp) restaurants/bars within a 10 minute WALK. Fabulous public schools nearby. I can get anywhere I want to in the city in 15 minutes because I'm pretty near the highway. I live by the beltline, the best urban trail/path in the country (per NYT). My neighbors are kind and friendly AF. Way too much culture for me to go see everything I want to. My nanny for my 1-year-old has a masters in child development and costs just $14/hour (compare to $25/hr in Boston). Atlanta airport has direct flights to 80% of the US. .... I love Boston too - in the summer. My wife and I visit every year or so. But 7 months of winter ❄️ ain't fun.
BOS
ATL sucks. Definitely BOS.
Wow. Tbh I've been trying to convince my husband to give ATL a shot. He won't consider ATL at all. Really really wants to move to Boston. You guys are making me think he's right. Is he right?
I live in ATL, and will advise you not to move here, except for buckhead the rest of the city is dull boring crap etc etc. I have been to Boston as well during the month of FEB and do not want to be ever be there again. Probably think of a new city
Boston
Offcourse Boston
Boston 100%
Boston is academically oriented, very smart progressives. It's cheaper than NY. Lots of cool startups. Also there are fun talks lectures in Cambridge. ATL I don't know.
Boston, OP. Not even a contest. If you have Atlanta projects for some period of time, you can get on a plane. Boston has much more going for it, in my view.
After all these responses, are you really still asking that question? Yes, he's right.
I crossing ATL off the list
Always go with your heart! You'll be happier even with a higher cost of living and not being paid to relocate.
There are no happy hours in Boston!
