Should my husband and I move to ATL or BOS? Currently in Deloitte federal. I travel to ATL right now and Deloitte will pay both of us to move there, but our hearts are in Boston.

D2, you may be right about areas outside of Atlanta but that's definitely definitely not for Atlanta and the surrounding suburbs. I grew up in a north Atlanta suburb, we have a concentration of some of the best schools in the country (public schools to add to that). Majority of the people I went to school with are doing just fine in life. You have a selection of great universities -UGA, GT, Emory, etc. as well as instate tuition scholarship. It may not be as exciting as Boston but there's plenty of stuff to do here, lots of outdoors, you're not far from anywhere else (Nashville, Charleston, Savannah, the beach), the climate doesn't blow, and the cost of living is cheap af. It is the south so you'll see some of what d2 was talking about, especially if you go to the more rural places but everyone is incredibly nice and polite. I've visited Boston multiple times and think it's a much prettier and livelier city but the cost of living alone would deter me. Also the weather

I love living in Atlanta and have lived in several big cities around the country. The big thing in ATL is finding an area of town that matches your personality. You could not pay me to move to Buckhead, Brookhaven, or any other suburb. 🤢Areas like Old 4th Ward, Cabbagetown, Decatur all have an awesome vibe, great food / drink options, and more authentic culture. But again, might not be your thing

One other advantage of Boston is ny projects are a quick flight.

I travel to ATL as well. Love the city and the people I know in Atlanta, but could never live there. The culture doesn't mesh with what I am looking for in a place to live. The flights from Boston to ATL are not way more expensive than from DC so you could probably move while on your current project and just promise to book flights 1-2 weeks earlier than before and work remote once a month to help balance the budget. Spend your remote week and fridays networking in the Boston office. As you are a federal consulting going to ATL, I have a pretty good idea who the client is. BOS has a large LSHC presence so that should make the switch to a BOS project down the road easier

like

Wow, lot of hate for ATL. There's nothing wrong with it - you can be happy in any city, I say take the money and give it a few years.

like

Base yourself in ATL, and live in Charleston, SC. Cost of living is great, location is great, weather is great, airport is good, restaurants and culture awesome, only issue is hurricanes.

like

I can't stress how much D10 is right about Atlanta. I've lived in Atlanta for most of my adult life and I grew up in Vermont, so I completely understand the difference in NE vs SE cultures. I personally love it here. Lots of very educated and nice people, lots to do, great schools, great restaurants and the cost of living is low. Traffic does suck but you can easily get to the airport in an uber in the morning in 30 minutes usually. I love in Buckhead but I agree that Inman Park is the best neighborhood hands down. I never go into the burbs, however, they aren't all bad. I have friends who work at BCG who live in Alpharetta in a mansion because the cost of living is so low. Your money goes far here. Personally, I don't like cold weather unless I am skiing, so if you enjoy warmth, this is the place be. Businesses are thriving. Give ATL a chance.

like

If you don't mind me asking, what level are you? I hope to eventually be able to relocate, and if I can do it through the firm that would be great. Also in federal here.

My thought would be go where you want to be if both you and husband are happy and see a future there. Maybe try to join a local BOS project?

Atlanta and Boston are entirely different cultures. If you like Boston a lot, I doubt you'd feel the same towards Atlanta.

Can someone explain the respective cultures of atl and bos?

Pwc5- nicely put. Live in atl and would mirror your thoughts. But lifestyle wise if you are a person who wants to be in the thick of things , boston is def an option. Atl suburbs are pretty boring and i think the school rankings are inflated due to the number of indian kids

Thank you so much guys

PwC5, I'm talking about northern Atlanta suburbs like Kennesaw, Johns Creek, Alpharetta, Suwannee. Same places. And look, I said there were exceptions. Out of the five families have relatives that I have there, to have kids that seem normal but they are also not at the age of graduating high school yet, so who knows.

^no happy hours or brunch in Atlanta

Put your relationship first. If SO is anti- ATL then don't go. And I'm speaking as an ATL resident who loves it here.

@D2 Atlanta has some of the best schools in the country hands down. Both cities are competitive in education, especially public. Pick where you want to live. A house isn't forever (unless you want it to be), and neither is a career. Choose what feels right to you know. I'd suggest spending a long weekend in both places, with someone who knows and loves the city.

The culture you see traveling to ATL is not the culture you see living there. I lived in Atlanta for middle and high school and loved it... working on my project now traveling in, I hate it. I love Boston too though. hard choice.

In BOS rn, want to move to ATL. Reasons - ppl are much nicer, easier to have a car, much cheaper to live, food is way fucking better - not even close, the weather in BOS is absolute shit, the work-life balance is better in atl, even in consulting. Trust me - move to ATL, you will never regret it

But u should definitely try to live in town and choose neighborhood carefully. If u move to johns creek, you will want to kill yourself
