M1 - lots of former B4 here. Very different pace. The no travel is the attractive part. But be ready to pump the brakes a bit. Salary progression is slow. So is promotion path. So be ready to drive the sh*t out of it if you want to move up. Try to negotiate as high of a salary as possible if you make the jump, because that will slow down to a crawl. For context: I’m 4 years here. Salary has gone up a total of 6%. If you’re a technologist, you’ll have better luck with increase
Not easier for technologist. Promotion is only tied to sales.. although one could argue technology sales might be easier because of partnerships and internal support. Who knows.
I travel ZERO. I live in Atlanta so I’ve got some pretty gnarly commutes, but away better than planes and hotels
On culture: you’ll read A LOT on this bowl, positive and negative. There’s even a post about how much negative has been posted here lately. It’s a great culture, but it’s largely office specific. I love it here because I work 40 hours, get paid reasonably well, and have lots of friends here
How bad are the commutes? I have an offer with the ATL office and I'm a bit concerned with that honestly.
Answer to both depends on what market you go to. If you are in a local office, you really won’t travel overnight with regularity unless the project requires it. Even then it could be a discussion w your pm about taking that on.
Commuting is a bit different. I’m in the Boston office and we’ve done projects from Portland me to providence and west to Springfield. Most folks are staffed w/in the 495 belt (roughly 10-15 mile radius around the city) though
Have never travelled for a project, only certification and training that I've asked for. Culture to me is cult-like, you're either deeply in it and paint it as a masterpiece or you see through the holes and realize it's pretty average (every company has flaws). Salary in my area is noticeably lower than other companies, but I guess it's a trade off.
I was actually approached by a Slalom recruiter recently. How do you ⛷fish like it over there? Any B4 transplants willing to talk about your transition experience?
The only travel I’ve had is because I’ve asked for it, and it’s few and far between. Otherwise all travel is local.. I even had one project I could walk home from. Culture is great, but definitely very different than other firms.
Culture is different how?
