So i am tired of buying 1 stock here and 5 stocks there and then not getting time and not looking at my account for 4 months. I am in consulting so don’t get time consistently. I have been saving some money so wondering if I can take a risk and invest 50 k to 100k in one go in say VOO or QQQ. But I am not the person who rebalances his portfolio or checks consistently. So do u think that is a good strategy. I am currently earning 5% on this cash in savings accounts.

With at least $25K in your account, you are eligible for level 1 options trading. Cover Calls and buying calls and puts. Buy a value stock (with dividend) and sell covered calls on them. You earn both ways.

You don't need $25K with most brokerages, and if you have options experience you can do everything. Level 3 spreads are actually lower capital risk than level 2 or level 1 naked calls and puts.

As said above. Covered calls are the most risk averse logically, but not actually since you don't have to trade your whole account. There are also limited ways to diversify with $25K and use covered calls.

"Buying the index", e.g VOO, is considered the best strategy by most professionals, including Warren Buffet

For five years I tried individual stock, buying options, selling options... i did everything and every single year I underperformed VOO

Last year I gave up and now VOO and HYSA are my only holdings

This is especially true if you don't have time to deal with it and if your time horizon is long (you don't expect to need the money in the next few years)

like

If you aren't going to be active, put it in VOO or SPY and set to reinvest dividends.

agree with the above comments, only thing id add is to set a recurring reminder, say, every 2 weeks, to average into a position rather than buy it all in one go

like

Google “BlackRock 84% Bitcoin”. The world’s smartest financial advisors at the world’s top asset management company recommend allocating 84% of your portfolio in BTC. You’d be stupid not to buy some at this point in the game. If you’re too lazy to research self-custody, buy the ETF.

funnylikesmart

If your time horizon is 4+ years, dollar cost averaging into BTC is better than 95% of financial advice out there on the internet. It would probably outperform the S&P500 too.

Great question and I’m literally in the same boat. lol. Same cash holdings in HSY. However, this is a horrible time to buy, NO????? Or am I being an idiot. I just feel like buying at 52-week highs is not the right strategy and that I should wait for the market to correct? Any thoughts? Help!!!! lol.

like

The market is at a 52w high something like 25% of the time, just look at the VOO (or any other major index) graph, it tends to break records very often

Statistically, it's still going up

And even if you buy just before a big crash, you'd still be doing well in a decade or two, again, based on past behavior of the market

The worse thing about waiting it out is that when it goes higher you always feel bad for not buying earlier, and when it goes down you always think it'll go down more

Therefore, if you're not actively trading, best to just buy and forget

like

I absolutely empathize with you. When buying in “bulk” it would make sense to wait for a correction. However, unless you are extremely confident that a correction will occur, you could be losing out on potential gains/dividends while you wait. I found that purchasing a set amount (ramit sethi says $500 a month so lets use that) once or twice a month, until a correction occurs, is an appropriate strategy. If you buy a few shares a month at a 52 week high and the etf tanks, then you dump your 50-100k, you’ve effectively bought down the avg purchase price of the etf.

Now if you’re adamant about buying all your shares at once, and are willing to wait it out. The 52 week high is a lot less relevant because 10 years from now you’d have made your money regardless. Just be sure to stick with a good etf (VOO is one).

Don’t bulk buy anything if you don’t know the market well. Just buy etfs if you want to park the money.

With a 100k you can get a managed portfolio from Chase. I’m doing pretty good and I don’t need go worry about anything. You can get the entire portfolio ahead of time and clear yourself so no issues.

Tbh, I wouldn't consider that much of a risk. That's (almost) less risky than holding it in cash.

If you actually want to leave it there for a long time and manage risk according to your retirement date, iShares has some target date ETFs you can buy that automatically balance stocks and bonds over time. Just Google "iShares LifePath Target Date."

DE, and the fees really can add up. If you want some bonds, putting 20% into TLT and the rest into VOO or SPY will be much better.

Set 5% high/low to sell automatic

Why would you do this on long term holdings?

So followon. I understand VOO and SPY but say buy bulk Amazon or NVIDIA ( I know it is expensive now), or Meta or Google. Or any other stock. Essentially is this a good strategy to do on a stock? Or maybe any of the upcoming AI stocks?

I use robinhood and would suggest main there a safe Aristocrat to hold on to for life I would go all in and reinvest the dividends for a few years

Historical stock returns are ~7-8%. Money markets and short term Treasuries are yielding ~5%. The stock market has an above average valuation and is relying on a very small number of companies to drive higher, meanwhile in he yield on cash is riskless.

There’s nothing at this moment that’s forcing you into the stock market. There are alternatives now. And people who say VOO and chill are blissfully ignoring the fact that both inflation and interest rates have reversed their 40 year trends. We’re no longer in the market environment when that easy approach worked.

Long time in the making; but we finally sold off from our 50% HWB short. We had two tests at the 3400 level, getting as high as 3420 today before the sell off. Momentum and pessimism over lack of stimulus could take us to the 3107 target quickly, nearly a 10 percent decline over the next month. Stay short my friends. It's going to get bumpy.
