So I received a Job offer from United Airlines last week. About 9k less than what I currently make so I decline the offer. Now they’re asking me well what salary did I have an mind and they’ll try to make it happen. If they’re starting off lowballing me, I don’t see them matching what I want. Hmmm. Thoughts?

You already declined it so what do you have to lose? Just give them a number and see what happens.

Thank you!

I worked at United. Your situation isn’t unique. Airlines especially United typically pay lower because they value flight benefits at 10k. The flight benefits are nice though. I miss them but I moved also for some place with a better WLB. You can expect 3% COL increases as well! Hope this helps!

This is why I always tell them upfront what I make now, and let them know that for me to consider a move, it’d have to be for something compelling. I think we’re all trying to “max out” raises every time we jump, which may work, may not. If they come back with a 10% raise, you can say that that isn’t compelling for you to move. But if they come back with 20% and that is worth the move, who cares if you could have gotten 40%. Also, and I’ve been in this position a couple of times - if you milk a new role for as much as possible, once you land, you’ll get minimal raises, to bring your comp back into the range for your role. That means you’ll be disheartened in your new role pretty quickly after you realize you’re gonna get small raises for a few years…

Might as well see what they’ll offer and understand any other benefits that will impact total comp.

Shoot for the stars (within reason) and let them tell you if it's feasible or not. You don't know what kind of budget they're working with, why make assumptions?

For all you know, their budget for the role could be even higher than what you had in mind. These people are fully expecting you to negotiate, not to just flat out decline bc of salary.

Thank you.

Gotta also consider other benefits. If you also get free travel with a buddy then it is one of the best benefits out there for me.

With employment law a moving target, most recruiters can’t directly ask you your current compensation, as such sometimes organizations make it all the way through to an offer with the understanding that it will likely be negotiated. My recommendation is you let them know your current total compensation: base salary, bonuses, PTO, plus any unique components of your benefits package that could be monetized if not matched (for example if you have a guaranteed bonus that isn’t performance based). Follow that up with a truthful range of what they would need to offer you to entice you to accept. If they can’t offer more base salary, perhaps they can offer a $5-10k sign on bonus. If not that, they might be able to give you an extra weeks worth of vacation accrual: something that might take it a few years to earn. let me know how it goes for you.

Ask for 30% more than what you currently make. However, keep in mind that your future raises will probably be very small to bring you in line with other folks at your level.

Thank you!

VENT: I feel completely demotivated after our new FOW announcement and it gave me whiplash. I didn’t choose to live here/move, the company chose ME where I’m at. I feel like I don’t belong because everyone else seems happy with this.
