So I was told the pay range for a position I'm interested in is $85-$95k. Today I got the official offer for $86k. When I tried to negotiate, they told me everyone starts at the bottom of the band regardless of their background. It feels like they're just being cheap. How often does this happen, and is there a good way to ask for more without sounding ungrateful?

I typically expect to be offered a salary towards the lower side of the pay range. Particularly in this market. The company is being cheap, but there are dozens, if not hundreds, of people willing to jump at that salary.

Good insight

It is not fair but the market heavily favors employers right now and job offers can reflect that. I asked for more and the offer got rejected but I felt good that I was at least assertive and bold enough to ask.

Agreed market is tough and employers have tighter range

If it’s a deal breaker, you could ask for the difference as a sign-on bonus. They may say no but it’s worth asking

Agreed

That can happen, some organizations are pretty rigid about that kind of thing. Sometimes if you've got experience and skills in demand you can get them to up the offer. It sounds like you've already gotten your answer however.

You don't have to take the offer. Keep looking. The best way to get a raise is a new job. If you take this one they want be giving you a raise anytime soon.

Very true

My opinion from reading your post, wait for a better opportunity. But I assumed and filled in a lot details that would impact my opinion.

In general, the more you job hop, the less opportunities you will have in the future. That being said, job hopping is very effective in advancing careers and increasing pay. If you think it’s an undervalued offer, wait for the next one.

Every situation is different. You need to be honest with yourself. See what similar jobs pay on the market. If you’re desperate to get out of a bad culture, or really stressed in your current job, $86k may be a good offer. In that case, take the job. On the flip side, maybe you’re a rockstar looking to advance your career more. In that situation, $86k seems low balling. Wait for a better opportunity.

If you’re a rockstar, the longer you stay at a company, the more doors that open up. Less pay now may equate to much higher returns later on. How big is this company? Smaller companies typically offer more opportunities but less pay in the beginning.

In conclusion, the small details and context matter in every scenario. Only you know what you should do.

How did you decide? Where do you locate?

Hey Fishes,

Joined LTI recently in P3 band. However not allocated any project. Got a call from the resource management team to relocate, which I rejected upfront as I was promised a role in the location I am posted. It has been over 2 weeks since I am in bench. What shall be the next steps, shall I wait for some days or start looking for other jobs as getting a project looks difficult as there are minimalist responses.

Morning all. I am looking for a favour/solid advice. I've been in the interview process for a dream role over the past month or so and just found out I didn't get the job after final round 🙃.

Unfortunately this isn't the first time this has happened during the past year searching. Looking for a SC level role within healthcare/public sector consulting firm. I know the job scene is a bit miserable currently but if anyone in the bowl is aware of a role I would love to have a chat.

Thanks all

I recently had an initial interview for a technical recruiter position. The guy on the phone stated that this is not a 9-5 job and long hours are expected. I proceed to ask how much PTO is offered and he said that is not recommend within the first 6 months of working and the harder you work the more PTO you receive. From that conversation, I saw instant red flags. Any thoughts?
