Generally the roles in a PE fund are:
1. Deal team - front office, full ownership of deal activity, highest comp + carry. Top of the hierarchy at all funds.
2. Investor relations - do all the fundraising and LP relations. Critical to the success of a fund because more AUM = more fees. While important, it’s not super glamorous work day to day and the skill set is essentially just marketing. No exit ops outside of IR but can build a respectable career in this field. Pay is lower than deal and ops teams and generally no carry, but still pays better than most non finance jobs (think 200K+ with solid work life balance).
3. PE Ops - Varies tremendously from fund to fund, but always supports deal team. In some cases it’s highly desirable (think KKR capstone which is very prestigious and one of the best pipelines to c-suite). In other funds they do all the grunt work the deal team doesn’t want to do. Can pay very well and carry is common especially at higher tenures.
4. Back office functions - think HR, accounting, IT etc. This is essentially no different to back office functions at any corporate. Not PE imo
I’ll also add that OP’s teams often jump into CxO roles at the portco on an interim basis and if they do well, those people often get a very lucrative role at the portco. In my experience, unless you’re in a larger fund, you can make more as portco CEO with their equity.
PE investment/deals and ops are very different things, lots of B4 people are deal support folks for PE clients but are just preparing financials, QOE, etc.
Do the PE support folks move there because it's better money or for the chance at the investment/deals side?
