Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

I have 1 YOE experience and make 80k at a small company. Honestly we’re hiring too. You should apply. https://www.softdocs.com/company/careers
Also we have developers from Chile, Argentina, and Mexico who all work remotely
Both offers seem a bit low for your YOE. Especially the 2nd one. Is your 8 YOE all in software?
Yes, with a PhD in networking.
Where are those located? As a software engineer in the SF Bay Area for example you could make $200k with 8 years experience!
Indeed, Spain is a very different market though! They are for Malaga and Barcelona respectively.

Y’all are citing US salaries. OP said he’s in Spain.

Public company all the way. Remote, equity and possibly an even better bonus. Sounds like a better work life balance. And…at the end of the day 8k difference after taxes isn’t that big of a difference. Good luck!

If you can work remotely from Spain (and prefers to) for the second offer, and if the salary is competitive in Spain, then definitely negotiate pay and it might be a good offer.
Where in the U.S. is the startup located? That'll help guide the responses you'd get.
Coach
@OP, >75 percentile is pretty good. If you'd prefer to stay in Spain, focus on the remote offer and negotiate for more.
Do not move to San Francisco for either role, you can't comfortably survive on a $100k salary in the bay. Unless if you desperately want to move, then brave it on and get a better paying job in a year or so. Cost of living in SF is high! If you're relocating with family who are dependent on your salary, don't even think of it.
If you’re considered “offshore” then they will go for a lower salary, as domestic developers cost twice as much for billable hours.
Take the Startup if you want to go above and beyond and learn and pave a path for the future. Take the public company if you want to have work life balance with a little less prospect for upward mobility.
My current company (F50) finally made me a counteroffer inline with the startup TC, also base salary only, to stay remote from my fav location. I am going to accept that and turn the other two down. It was a very hard choice but I think this was the most balanced offer in terms of comp, WLB, responsibilities, and impact. I have read around that there is a strong opinion against accepting counter offers. Why do you think is that the case? I really enjoy my current company and decided to have a look around just because I was offered a better remote location, but they finally accommodated my needs. Just looking for your 2cents about counter offers.
