Some days it is extremely difficult to stay in this field. With a 21 year old autistic son who I am legal adult guardian of, who has his share of difficult days, I'm basically never off duty from helping people with disabilities. Sometimes I think it's time for a change. This morning he made me an hour late with a meltdown. Luckily I work in special ed and people understand. So I can't really change careers because where else would people have this level of understanding.

That is a lot to manage. I hope you have a strong family and community support system. There is nothing wrong with seeking help for yourself and your son. Are there programs in your area to help you with your son? Adult day programs? Job training? Would he be able to live in an adult group home so that he can feel sense of independence and you can find more balance in your life? Being overwhelmed and exhausted only leads to burn out and not being able to be your best self for your son, yourself, and your students. If you need to change careers, it is totally understandable. But if you can also alleviate some of the pressure you have at home, that could help too.

The field of special education is not limited to working with people with disabilities. There is administration, specifying a subject, academic intervention for regular education students, and various specialized reading and math programs. It's how you specialize your education and experiences.

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?

I have a principal with ZERO sped experience or knowledge observing and rating me. I got all distinguished last year from my AP. He gave me all basics & 2 unsat. He’s told us to not worry about goals

IEP, 504, and those without internet will return in-person next week while rest of students remain remote. Regular Ed teachers may have students (mild Learning Disabled kiddos) in their room while teaching. They are saying it’s a liability issue if they have one student in the room with them, even though teaching other via Zoom. Thoughts? Anyone else experiencing this?

Hi SpEd Teachers, is anyone else facing EXTREME staff shortages as a result of state funding? We are not able to meet my students' IEP requirements (not even close) due to not enough paraprofessionals and the district flat out refusing to hire more. I've lost 70+ hrs/week of para hours over the past few years and my students are really suffering. This leaves our district open to lawsuits, but the real problem is the state's education budget. What can we do?? This isn't going to fix itself.

Do you work the holidays into your lesson plans this time of year? Or is it too much of a distraction from your routine? Teaching a SPED music class this year and the students have finally *mostly* become comfortable in the room and with the instruments + noise. We usually work on the same songs each week for one month, but I'm thinking of switching it up and doing Christmas/Holiday songs next week as a send off into break. I work with mostly autistic students.

Anyone else the last to be informed about ANYTHING at their site?
