It's hard. Remind yourself that it's now or later, but there is no escaping it.
My 6 year old has been in daycare since he was 5 months and I think he only had 1 sick day all of last year. I am pleased now to not have him missing school, but the early days were tough.
I also have a 1 year old who had HFM last week and currently has an unrelated runny nose/cough. It's just the life we live. Know you're not alone 💓
Thank you ❤️. Hope your little one feels better soon!
Its a right of passage, unfortunately. It would happen now or once they start kindergarten so better off to get out of the way now. One day at a time, you can do it!

I know it’s tough. New teachers/staff always have a rough go w viruses their first year of working in a school, esp in elementary. 🤧
It is really rough. Our 2yo when they went to daycare they were easily home sick at least every other week and daycare seemed more like backup care than stable care.
After about 1.5 years of that our then 3.5 year transitioned to being sick once or twice a year.
There is some hope - also had baby during same time, now they have been at daycare for a year and has only missed 1 or 2 days total since they built up immune system from older sibling.
Sadly you have not yet filled out your bingo card, good luck with the worst (for us) Roseola to come.
Same. I have twins and when they started daycare they were sick every other week. One had some random infection and had to be hospitalized overnight. It happens in preK and begins to lighten up around kindergarten. By first grade everyone should have iron clad immune systems and you’ll probably just see an occasional cold. Hang in there. Stick up on Tylenol and the baby meds.
Also just to validate - yes it is an awful time for everyone involved. I did cry a lot wondering how any place expected anyone to have 2 working parents if THIS is what happens when they get sick, like how does anyone function?! But anyone who has been through it, gets it and is understanding. If people don’t have kids they start to wonder “how possible could their kid be sick THAT much?!” But that’s ok them and not having to have gone through the experience.
Seriously! Feels like it’s a constant battle of hot potato. I don’t think I could have done it at my last firm (BCG) — they wouldn’t have been understanding about it, but hopeful my new job is more understanding and boss has 3 little kids of his own.
I was in the same boat but with Twins… I will say that every time they do get sick now (after being in daycare for a year) it’s less severe each time. My wife and I joke about offing ourselves every time our daycare sends out a message about a confirmed case of HFMD since the twins have had it three times now and were hospitalized the first. It’s miserable, but as parents we somehow get through it, one day at a time. Keep your head up!
Omg, 3 times?! (And times 2!). I’m so sorry, that’s horrendous. We’re just dealing with the aftermath of the kiddo losing a few nails now 😭.
Trying to, thank you!
My 2 year old just started going to daycare and has been sick for more than 50% of her time there. We now also have a newborn who got a cold from his sister at 2 week old. Thankfully both of them are better now. Some days are just always harder than others but you’ll push through ♥️
Yeah we went in 2/3 week cycles. Every 2/3 weeks we had a week sick. This lasted all through the winter. Now he’s much better (he also got tubes which helped a lot!)
😭. So glad to hear your little one is doing better though!
Mine went in for the first time ever last week. Came back with the flu and it destroyed us all at home. We prepared for this but we know it's going to happen again. Be mentally strong and boost your immunity with supplements.
Force naps if you can. That was recovery time. Feel free to vent - that helped a lot :D
Your baby will build a decent immune system from your toddler and may not get sick as much when he/she starts daycare
I have a 3 year old who started daycare at 14 months and for a year we just cycled sickness every week in our house. But my youngest baby started daycare at 9 months and hasn’t been sent home, I believe it’s because he’s already had pink eye and some other illnesses thanks to my toddler.
The silver lining 🥲. The little one has already had the flu and norovirus and was exposed to me having COVID while pregnant. The struggles of virus vs human.
@BCG1 are you the same person I just responded to about 3 kids in the Working Moms group? You have such a kindness in your replies I feel like you are.
Daycare sickness is annoying, but I do feel my kids stay home from school less than their peers who we know didn't go to daycare before Kinder.
I did just have a new "we are the worst parents" experience recently. My oldest, 4th grade, always coughs and sniffles just before bed no matter the season. It's worse when they have a cold. But it is persistent. After a recent bout of being annoyed by it, I said I had enough and we were going to investigate it. The investigation eventually led us to the Allergist about 3 weeks ago. We did the intake paperwork saying no obvious triggers or reactions. Since it was respiratory reactions and not gastro, they Allergist ran the environmental panel and not foods. We got a reaction to all pollens (live in SoCal so nothing we can do) and highly allergic to dogs. My heart sank. I can't tell you the number of times I have filled out paperwork for my kids at various doctor appointments saying we don't have pets, which is entirely true. We do, however, send our kids to a daycare where they have dogs. My 4th grader has been going there since I returned to work when they were 12 weeks old. They went full time until Kinder, and since then go daily after school. I feel sooooooooo bad! We are still working on getting it all under control, but oh my heart. I truly feel like the worst parents some days.
Got me 🙈. You’re too kind, thank you!
Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry you had to deal with that, but how could you have possibly known? I actually know more than one healthcare professional who got their kids a dog specifically because the kids had dog allergies (something about the exposure potentially helping counter the allergy — unclear if it actually worked). You cared enough to investigate it and get it under control, that’s all a kid can ask for and sounds like your kiddos have a wonderful mom!
Honestly it’s insane how many things we need to track for them. I was upset with myself recently when I noticed how many things I’m “dropping the ball on” as of late and my husband reminded me that it’s okay to not get everything right all the time because of how many more things we’re responsible for now!
It gets worse before it gets better. Once they run through all the diseases and build up an immune system, it’ll be better.
I have no advice, it’s f’n hard !!!! But we just do our best and hope our employers are flexible. I’m sorry you’re going through this… my family had norovirus 3 times this year. It’s AWEFUL!
