Starting my tax LLM (GT) this August 2021 part time. Should be done in 3 years. Are chances switching from big4 to big law after graduating with my tax LLM pretty low since I would have been in Big4 over 5 years by then?

Nope, I’ve seen a lot of people switch. Just network! Pretty sure you can participate in TIP in your final year but networking would be better.

Thank you!!

Big law are always looking for top tier tax lawyers. Also don’t dismiss opportunities which will open up for you in Big4. I had a very successful career in a 200 lawyer plus regional law firm but oftentimes , the true experts in any tax sub speciality, are partners in the national accounting/consulting firms.

Thank you for this! A goal is definitely to try to get into national tax!

Bust your but, make great connections with your professors, and get good grades. This will maximize your chances.

like

Work hard snd have something to offer. Know plenty that have done it.

As a GT LLM grad myself, I can tell you that you should just bust your ass to get extremely good grades. Your work experience is valuable and cementing your competence with the grades should open a lot of biglaw doors.

like

If your grades are good you should have a good shot.

like

Possible but wouldn’t count on it

Llm is not enough but having a solid base of knowledge is more important. Better to try to get into national office of b4

Senior attorneys at v100, how common is it for attorneys who start at small firms to lateral to biglaw? Have you worked with any? Conventional wisdom is always that if you don’t start there it’s hard to “trade up”. My coworker and I just did it to two different great v30 firms, and I’m wondering if it’s really that uncommon? Just out of curiosity. We’re not special counsel with special niche skills or anything, just associates. Pitfalls to beware? Positives?

So i have been fortunate that i have managed to go through my career without the need for a degree. I was lucky enough to have been hired by one of the worlds top consulting firms, worked with a whole lot of big clients and travelled a lot. I have a whole bunch of certifications in my industry…but just no formal degree. (cont'd)

Recommendations for a west coast recruiter specializing in tax positions? For someone in biglaw who wants to go in house.

When the IRS (e.g., a RO/AO/Examiner) calls or writes a letter… How do you verify that it’s really the IRS and not a scam? I’m new to tax law and I’m worried that I’m going to respond to/answer a scam and give away client info (or my own tax preparer info). I don’t think my worry is unfounded due to the tremendous amount of tax/IRS scam out there but it would be nice to hear from some of y’all so that I’m not so worried about it…

Has anyone dealt with stuffing allocation in a non-hedge fund context? It seems even in the HF world the law is fuzzy in using aggregate reverse 704c principles in stuffing allocations. Like, sure, the market is there but no authority really blessed it (other than some Cravath partner’s article in Tax Notes in 2013). If we are talking asset class that isn’t really like marketable securities but might be able to treat it similarly solely by virtue of, say, valuation on a quarterly basis (contd)
