Hey OP I’m so sorry you’re going through this. A few suggestions I have: 1. Network. Reach out to everyone you know, tell them you’re available. Like literally everyone. Linked in, past coworkers, friends, etc. Even if they don’t have anything now you’ll be fresh in their head. 2. Staffing Agencies like Creative Circle. We love to hate on them and yes the rates suck but right now explore every avenue. 3. How is your credit? Do you have an LLC and could you apply for a business loan? Or could you apply for a 0% interest rate credit card? (First year is often 0%). This advice is tricky as I don’t want to steer you further into debt. But If you are literally worried about being homeless I’d look into it. 4. Is there anything non industry related you can do to tide you over such as driving for Uber or being an Instacart shopper?
TYSM 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
OP are you in NYC? If it ever becomes bleak, can lend you a couch or air mattress to crash on.
I hope someone out on your coast is just as generous to lend you some space if you need 🙏
Have you applied for financial aid or a payment plan from your medical providers? Often if you are unemployed you become eligible for financial aid or reduced payments from hospitals and possibly other providers.
Hey yea so I’ve paid most everything to date off because I couldn’t extend it at the time. A lot of it was not covered by insurance. Hence the lack of savings and debt + debt from when I wasn’t working. thankfully I don’t have any huge medical bills looming over me atm (that I can remember LOL). Thanks so much!
Apply for charities for medical expenses. There are charities that will help sometimes within hospitals and out. You should have state medical insurance covering medical costs if you’re unemployed. Apply. Apply for food stamps. Churches and non profits offer free food drives. Housing start researching shelters and transitioning housing that you qualify for. Do not let yourself get to homelessness. There’s free support. Take it. That’s what it there for to help in these times. Reach out for help; loved ones. Sell things you have if you need to (jewelry/clothes etc.)
Thank you I did not realize that about the state insurance I will talk to them this week.
I’m sorry you’re going through this OP. Is your background in AD or copywriting? My agency just had an ACD spot open up in NY.

@AD 2: Way to rally and help OP. More like this here, please.
You might also find a gig north of the border. There’s still a massive talent shortage here and recruiters are scrambling. Many are bringing US talent to Canada. And most of us are still fully remote. Might be worth meeting with some Canadian recruiters.
Mandrake, IQ Partners, Creative Niche, are all worth checking out!
Start working off you lowest budget: like go to food banks for groceries and sell what you can for cash. Start working for door dash or whatever right now. Call Amex and tell them you won’t be paying for a while.
Look for cheaper housing and move if the numbers make sense (losing your deposit to save a little might not be worth it). Talk to your landlord about ending your lease early on good terms. They might even give you some grace.
Don't give up. Side gigs save lives (including mine)
Uber
Fiver
Donate Plasma
Night shift at taco bell
You'll get through it.
I don’t wanna invalidate your experience. It’s hard. My experience: I got laid off right before covid, while going through cancer treatment, sole provider of a family of 4…..It sucks but have faith in yourself. You solve problems for clients all the time. Start looking into Medicaid / Medicare. There’s no shame in taking advantage of these programs. And it doesn’t mean you’ve failed.
But it also means that we have a lot of problems w healthcare that not one award baiting agency has ever tried taking on.
It’s almost like advertising is being propped up by the very healthcare companies that are actively pushing us down.
Not invalidating at all. Believe it or not not the hardest thing I’ve been through. I’m so sorry you dealt with that, must have been so scary to be laid off. How are you feeling now? Thanks for the encouragement. And yes agreed re: healthcare. Most of my stuff was out of pocket.
So sorry to hear this - it sounds like a real struggle. I'm a west coast CD and we work with (remote) freelancers. If you're interested feel free to DM me w your site etc.
Have you thought about starting a side hustle to do creative work in consulting or freelance? I've had my own business for the past 20 years, even while employed, and it's helped me thru the toughest financial times. You are obviously talented at what you do. Focus you energy into giving yourself some breathing room financially. Do what you're good at and you'll probably feel a lot more in control of your situation. ❤️
ACD if you're working in pharma and or interested, I'd be happy to help you network. I have a ton of LinkedIn contacts after freelancing for many years. Please reach out if I can be of any assistance. Best regards ✨️
I have pharma exp. Will DM you Monday!
I’m sorry you’re going through this. Stay strong and think about your health first. Without that nothing else matters
Thank you. That is what I’m trying to do. I’ve hit rock bottom too many times and I’m not going back. My health is my main priority.
Also Look into Balance transfers to consolidate all that debt
You gotta do the math, checkout nerd wallet, consolidation comes at a percent of the total debt. But Better than whatever interest rate and AMEX is offering you
I’m working remotely from Puerto Rico. I have 2 bedrooms and only use one. If you need a place to crash for a bit until you get back on your feet (and if you can cover the air fare), happy to put you up. The cost of living here is MUCH lower than on the mainland and the scenery is perfect for improving a mind set.
and tmrw I am applying for unemployment as my W2 gig just ended. I am praying something comes through for Q4 otherwise I have no idea what the future holds or how I will get through to the holidays . I have a VERY modest 401 because of said acute illness and fundings needed for that. I have no idea what to do or how I can pay the rent at the end of the month. I'm scared of this recession getting even worse in the spring and that I will be on the streets.
I'm so sorry @art director 1 you are dealing with this as well. I'm praying you see better days ahead. I would sell my stuff too but ironically have no furniture bc i lived in a moldy/bed bugs place a few years ago LOL. It is painful to get rid of stuff but you will make up for it a couple years down the line and have things you love just as much.
Also I realize homeless sounds dramatic and I don’t want to make light, but then when I think about it I just have no idea where I will go if I can’t get something soon. I unfortunately can’t go to my parents. 😩 so it’s kind of not
@operations director 1 I typically agree with you in that people put on a front but 90% of my friends have enough generational wealth that is relatively unaffected by a recession thus their parents could float a 3k apartment for months on end in the event they found themselves in my shoes. It’s just awkward. I am not trying to paint myself as impoverished I am just not in that situation now.
