I’ve done commission-only and sure, it lights a fire under you... because you have no choice. But that’s not motivation, that’s survival. In salaried roles, at least bad days don’t wreck your whole paycheck. Commission work just makes burnout feel like part of the job description.
What a great answer! I guess it's feast or famine with commission only. Although I would think salary plus commission would be the hot diggity!
I’ve done both, and I was way more driven in commission, but also constantly stressed. One month, I crushed it and felt unstoppable; the next month I was panicked. Salary gives peace of mind, but yeah, it can also lead to coasting. So, now I have a mixed salary. What helps me now is setting personal income goals, no matter the pay model. Do you think you’d thrive in pure commission long-term?
I don't think I could survive on commission only, but kudos to those who can!
I would love to take advantage of the potential rewards of commission, but can’t take the risk of not making money to pay the bills.

Indeed! With hard work comes reward, but I'm not built like that!
I’ve been on the sales side for most of my 20 yr insurance career and it was almost always a mix of a low base salary and then you were meant to make most of your pay off commission, which there was one exception I made a higher base and a “little” commission and I definitely didnt work as hard because the commission wasnt going to make me that much more money, and ultimately I made less compared to other places and pay models I have been at.
