VOO. I predominantly use Schwab’s robo advisor and have consistently been 8% below S&P 500. (1) based on the historical performance of VOO, am I better off shifting all of my retirement and brokerage accounts to VOO? (2) how do I do that? How should I go about this? Liquidate all my robo advisors and then buy VOO? Hope you all don’t roast me too hard!

Robo advisors often put you in x% of SP500 plus y% bonds. Their value prop is less volatility, not beating or even matching market returns. This has benefits sometimes: I guess that in April 2020, your portfolio may have been beating the market.

What's your risk tolerance? You can go all VOO, but don't do that if you'll have a heart attack next time the market goes down.

What is the portfolio that robo advisors investing in?

Why don't you move it away from robo advising to just investing in Schwab ETFs? SCHB is the VTI (total stock market fund, which tracks about 3k stocks instead of the 500) equivalent.

like

Robo advisors are hardly worth it. I'd find a reputable brokerage and do an inkind or ACAT transfer so that you can move all of your investments over to a new brokerage. They likely are already invested in VOO (or something similar) so you won't have to sell yet.

Then wait until your investments are at least a year old to sell so you can avoid short term capital gains. Then reinvest in VOO/VTI. My 2 cents.

like

Schwab puts you in a lot of cash automatically even on aggressive plans because that’s how they get paid with the “no fee” system by lending out that cash. It’s terrible and probably a main reason for the underperformance. Go to betterment if you want a Robo

like

8% below S&P 500 is terrible over a period of 5 years or more. Get away from robo, invest your future money into index ETFs for total market, large cap growth, and extended market. Then look slowly into specialized ETFs for tech etc.
When the current stocks become long, consider switching them over as well

like

Depends what kind of risk profile you plugged into Schwab intelligent portfolio but even its highest risk profile has some cash and bonds. If you wanted to go full equity then yeah Schwab robo won’t help with that.

Hello all!

Am I correct in my understanding that:

Over a certain income ($76k as of 2021), a single person CANNOT make tax-free contributions to a traditional IRA if you have a workplace retirement plan?

In my example, I have a work 401k, and my adjusted gross income is over (or just about hovering) at the 76k limit. This means I can't make pre-tax contributions to a traditional IRA, so I should just go for a Roth?
