I was working on my master's in English while teaching English. (BA is in science.) I ended up taking the reading skills in my high school textbook--all the techniques mentioned in this article--and applying them to my own course reading. Because I learned to use them in this context and found them very helpful, I was really excited to teach my students about them. I still incorporate them into my classroom work, identifying them by name as we apply them. To me, it's all very exciting. I hope my students pick up at least a modicum of enthusiasm from mine.

Had a first round interview scheduled for a large CPG brand. My interviewer never called me, and I emailed following up to confirm the call. It’s been over a day and no response. What is going on with recruiters? I tried giving them the benefit of the doubt, but not even an email back saying “something came up” or “we’ve moved on” ? I’ve been ghosted after every final interview during my recent job search, but never had I been ghosted before even having the first call??

So, what clinic do you all go to?

I’ll start it off. I’ve been to 3:
1. RSC in San Ramon, CA
2. Spring in Oakland and SF, CA
3. SCRC in Santa Barbara, CA

I’ve also done outside monitoring at RMA in SF, CA. Multiple reasons for the many clinics if anyone is interested.

Under contract for nearly 1.1M. Wife and I are at HHI $315k. Will go up in the future, $400k in 3 years and $500k possible in 5-7 years. We have $300k in non-retirement funds, $260k of which will go towards acquiring the house. We have 2 kids and will probably reduce (not maxing) retirement accounts next 18 months to do this. Anyone have any thoughts or feedback? We’ll have to live on a budget and watch but I feel we’ll get used to it and income will grow.

Do you do most of your novel reading in class or assign it for homework? Why?

When beginning a piece of literature, I first help the kids access the relevant culture. I have used web quests, but I have found that the kids researching their choice of topics and creating Slides containing information and pics results in more students participating. Recently they researched heraldry for the Medieval Era and reproduced either a family crest that they found or created their own personal crest. Anyone have other activities they use?

How do you engage your students in more reading outside of what is required in the classroom? I’m thinking about moving up to a high school English position from 8th grade English. Mainly I’m looking for a change. Any thoughts on the differences I’d be facing?

I have high school children of my own, but disciplining high schoolers has always intimidated me for some reason. I have excellent classroom management, but I feel like high schoolers are a little smarter ab getting around rules and less worried about consequences.

I’m told by an hs tchr that the grading load is ab the same.

I got an email last night from a 7th-grade parent because her son said I mentioned the words "male privilege" in class, and she is very concerned about how that is related to ELA (she said "reading"), and she is concerned about this being taught in public schools. To be clear, I didn't do a lesson on this subject but we did discuss rights versus privileges. I've had multiple parents contact the school/get upset with me because of things like his. It's exhausting... Thoughts?
