I think it’s reasonable to push back on letting this cost savings come directly out of your family time. One way to look at it is that the layover doesn’t have to impact time at home. It can impact time at the destination instead. If they want a cheaper flight, then arrival time, meeting start times, or on site availability may need to shift to accommodate that choice.
That’s essentially how I’ve had to handle RTO as well. If I’m told I need to be in the office at 8:30am, but I also need to get my child to school at 7:15am, then early morning meetings simply aren’t possible anymore. It’s not a refusal. It’s just the reality of competing constraints. They decide how they want me to use my time, and I adjust, but I try very hard to make sure the adjustment doesn’t come at the expense of my family.
You could frame it the same way. You’re willing to rebook to save the company money, but the tradeoff is that the extra travel time has to be absorbed elsewhere. Later arrival. Shorter day on site. Leaving earlier on the back end. That keeps the cost savings aligned with business time rather than personal time, which is a fair boundary to hold.
This is unhinged!
Maybe you can suggest other ways to reduce costs for this trip like staying at a less expensive hotel or spend less on meals. Maybe you could negotiate some comp time for the added hours for the layover?
Crazy work
Thank you all!
That's a very interesting topic. How did you handle this matter afterward?
