I hear you. In theory, restorative talks could help, but if they just shift blame onto teachers instead of addressing real issues, that’s a problem. Accountability has to go both ways, students, admin, and parents included. If it’s just performative, it’s a waste of time. Have you seen any success with it?

I haven't. The teachers I know who have had to go through this, leave feeling like it was a waste of time. Also, for a follow-up, some of the students behaviors escalate because they feel like they got the teacher "in trouble". Only one teacher that I know of who had a restorative with parent, principal, and student, Saudi that there was a change. The parent was shocked at the behavior of their child and ripped into them, apologized to the teacher, and made the child apologize. However, that is a rarity nowadays.
We don’t have that. If everybody was on board to make the best out of the situation, make an action plan that has consequences if not followed, I could see the hype. Reality though, it is probably just used as a check box, well we tried, but oh well.

At our school, it b almost seems like a way to divert discipline and give the student a chance to "talk" with the teacher. No change in behavior.

In my opinion this Restorative mess is more geared to entitlement and inclusion. The "Zero Tolerance" discipline policies are too " harsh", so the Restorative solution cuts down on expulsion and disciplinary actions. This article from the NEA kind of explains it and confirms my opinion. https://www.nea.org/nea-today/all-news-articles/restorative-practices-schools-work-they-can-work-better
I was asked to attend a Restorative Justice meeting with a hugely irritating student. Our contract does not require us to take part in these. Enough said.!
