Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations
Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?
Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

I think bringing up personal issues or situations as a negotiation technique is almost always a bad idea. It just comes off as unprofessional and can seem irrelevant or petty. The only time it could be useful might be, for example, if a company made someone change a work location which added to the commute. The company changing the circumstances seems like it would be a fair point to bring up.
I agree with the company relocating. My company went through that a few years ago, they moved to a new office space 45 minutes south to a big city. Most employees lived north of the former office and now needed to take public transportation into the city. I’m sure many people wouldn’t have accepted their positions at those salaries if they knew they would have the additional cost of the commute.
I wouldn't either. My understanding has always been that companies do not care one bit about your personal life. They need to be convinced that you're worth the extra money you're requesting. Talking about a long drive or needing to afford your kids' private school isn't going to sway them.
Yah bad advice for sure! That’s a red flag for a “me me me all about me” type of candidate who will be nothing but a thorn the rest of their employment so I’ll hard pass.
