Only child, parents live 45 min away. Thankfully one parent is doing pretty well, but the other is 80+ with lots of health issues and doc appointments. It’s tough and we want to get them closer to us if we can, but moving is expensive (especially in our state). Not the worst but not a great situation all around.
Out of seven us, four out of state, one useless, my sister and I care for both my mother and father as they got to that point. It was rough bc we both lived a good 60 min plus away. It’s a battle of the wilds really. My husband is an only child so we helped with my mother-in-law w the heavy lifting done by my husband.
My father, at age of 90, said he couldn’t live in assisted living bc ppl had wheelchairs in there. They were apparently too old for him lol His falling straight down when we were out was maddening. He always got up but 🤦🏻♀️
One thing we should have done is to have a family meeting and talked about how everyone can help. That’s one thing I wish we did. Everyone needs to help out. It’s exhausting when you get the call that your dad has fallen and you’re on the call back list. Things out of the norm but need immediate attention. And don’t forget about being an advocate when one is hospitalized. Someone has to be on top of that. It’s best to talk to others in the family when there is no emergency or issue going on that needs attention so you can keep emotions out of it.
Good luck!
Get them at least part time in home care - the sooner they get used to having someone in their space the easier the transition will be to them needing longer term support
Not at this point yet, but concerned I will run into this with my husband's parents one day. They are in their early 60s but already facing some health issues
