Agreed, do both.
The way the medicines were described to me was through a metaphor: you are out at sea and treading water. You have to swim to shore. The medicine is just a device to help you float a bit higher. You still have to do the work to get to shore (ie therapy) but it’s just a little bit easier with your flotation device
I would try to do both. Therapy can teach you skills to deal with anxiety, but psychiatrists are the ones who can prescribe. You may have to try a couple, as some will just randomly prescribe you stuff as anti-anxiety/depression medications are trial and error.
I also recommend both. The meds can help stabilize you and therapy helps you cope with what you're experiencing. There are meds outside of SSRIs as well.
I went to a psychiatrist so an MD. He prescribed the correct meds in the first appointment (in my case Lexapro) which treats anxiety too but has a bad side effect of causing drowsiness. Check out mental health clinics with MDs on staff. It can be a pain to get a first appointment but it’s worth it to start with an MD and get the help you need earlier on.
