Thoughts on Arnold & Porter vs KE in Chicago for healthcare?

K&E will almost always be just specialist support on PE deals. I slogged that work at McDermott for a while and it’s a special type of soul crushing.

like

KE is just regulatory btw. It doesn’t matter if you’re based out of Chicago or Dallas; they are hiring across the firm. You will be working across offices and will be doing ancillary support for their M&A transactions.

like

I didn’t know Arnold & Porter had a Chicago office and I’ve worked here for 5 years. Used to work at K&E as a specialist and always liked the healthcare group when we interacted, but it is almost entirely M&A support if that’s not your thing

like

It depends heavily on what you want to do. If you're good with just transactional work and don't mind being insanely busy, K&E may be fine. If you're looking for any level of variety (regulatory counseling, investigations support, etc.) and to have a practice beyond M&A, I don't think K&E would be my pick.

I have been in Recruiting and HR for 11 years and thinking about making a career move. Ild love to hear from anyone that’s made a career move from HR to a different role.

Are there any good movies or novels that show skill development - like follow through? Self-management? Money management? I read a lot of self help books so I know a lot of the theory, and books peppered with examples help, but I feel like most 1 paragraph examples don’t five justice to how hard it may be to change a behavior.

I got an offer at Nokia, and my new manager said that she wanted to put me in the higher salary bracket however the HR insisted that we lowered the range. That caused me to receive a much lower salary than expected. Should I renegotiate even when my manager said that she tried giving me more. Does HR really play that big of a role in this?

Mid 2020, I turned down an opportunity to jump ship from my small law firm to a big law firm. At the time I had 4 years of practice under my belt with managerial experience. I thought the offer was reasonable, come in at a 2nd year level, but with the uncertainty of the times I played it safe. Now I regret it. What avenues do I have, if any, to jump into big law from a small firm?

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school
