Thoughts on joining the OCC/Fed/FTC/SEC type agencies as a lower level staff attorney at this time under this admin? Not sure I can do 2.5 more years in biglaw

Look at state analogs of these agencies, instead. It’s too risky to join these federal agencies right now. You’ll develop relevant knowledge and still be able to apply to the feds later.

Also, since this question is asked frequently, note that it is often not necessary to reside in the state where you work, though you will likely need to be able to commute there.

Many states allow you to waive into their bars, as well.

It will always be on your resume that you joined now, so think carefully about where you want to be later and how the decision-makers there will read this line on your CV. It also matters which agency and what type of work; obviously joining the immigration enforcement arm of the DOJ is different from going to the SEC to do accounting fraud investigations.

This has been something I’ve been thinking about. If I’m doing pretty non-partisan finreg stuff, idk if it looks that bad? Like the work hasn’t changed that much if at all? All the agencies mentioned aren’t super partisan compared to doj etc

Speaking as someone at one of these agencies, things have evened out quite a bit. It is less turbulent than it was but this also varies greatly depending on agency. Would I join DOJ right now? No. Financial regulators? Maybe. We’re also seeing an incredible drop in qualified applicants, fwiw.

Why 2.5? What year are you now?

What if Republicans win 2028? I really doubt anything changes if so. Bridges were crossed.

Fed is definitely more insulated. OCC definitely has a lot of interesting stuff with GENIUS Act

What's your career path? I know firm life, govt litigation, or in-house arent for me, but I do like clerking for a Justice. I guess my question is, are there any other options aside from the first 3?

I’ve been at my clerkship for 5 years (4 with a different judge) and one with my current judge, and I heard horrible things about him before starting, but I assumed they were exaggerated. Turns out they’re all true, and I’ve had to start therapy to deal with him and the incredibly toxic environment. I’m trying to get out ASAP b/c he also has a history of firing clerks without cause or notice, but I think I’ll only be able to give two weeks notice if i get the job I’m interviewing for. Thoughts?

Considering taking a position with a small-cap in the US trying to build their legal department. The title is standard “counsel” although the work would be with the senior leadership team and reporting to the GC in Europe. How reasonable is it to ask for a bump in title - Senior counsel or Head of Legal, US? If it matters, I am a 6th year and have been told that I will be expected to hire a junior or paralegal as we build up.

Hi all, need some help in approaching this: So I was interviewing for a specific role and finished final rounds. However, the head of the dept wants to pitch me for another role that he thinks I’m a better fit for although for the previous role interview, it’s positive outcome too. I’m more interested in the prior role. How do I go about expressing that?
