I recently had an initial interview for a technical recruiter position. The guy on the phone stated that this is not a 9-5 job and long hours are expected. I proceed to ask how much PTO is offered and he said that is not recommend within the first 6 months of working and the harder you work the more PTO you receive. Finance/other transactional lawyers: how do you fit in exercise to your day? I’m a 3rd year and struggling. Currently doing 10-12 hours chargeable/day.

Obviously many of us get paid very well and there is an expectation with work demands for being paid that high. But what’s too much? How do you set a limit to preserve your mental health? I find myself guilty for taking time to decompress but I know I come back to work refocused after I do it.

Did your firm’s leadership send a message re the horrific shooting? Before I lateraled we always got emails from leadership, which IMO were very humanizing and appreciated. New firm leadership seems to just avoid — probably to not appear politically involved. Your thoughts on these types of current events and firm acknowledgment?

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. What can a junior associate do about a mid-level that constantly asks questions about things they were cc’d on, sends dozens of piecemeal emails and is generally just super high strung and needs everything right away?? No other mid-levels I’ve worked with act this way and this individual I’m working with is driving me insane and I’ve spent countless hours attaching emails and saying “as explained in the attached email…”

Can someone explain to me what law clerks are in private practice? I'm based internationally but deal with our NY office a lot, and I can not figure out what the title actually means/where it sits.

Was interviewing with a firm and soon after receiving an offer, learned of bad culture/toxic partners in the practice group from a couple of associates who recently lateraled from the firm. I turned the offer down. A partner that I clicked with while interviewing reached out asking me why I turned down the offer. Should I be honest and relay what I heard?
