I do mostly enjoy my job now however with recent layoffs, promotion delays etc, has me wondering

I’d say you might get frustrated with the government but yes job security and yes to work life balance. (my 3 family members work for the government)
Could this role be impacted by government shutdowns?
That seems to be a trend lately in the political arena.
Depends on the type and area of government that is impacted for the government. As I have now learned, there are many parts to many spending bills and so just because the news says a government shutdown is coming, doesn’t mean it affects all of the government. I will say I did ask this in my interviews and they mentioned they can count on one hand one many times they have been affected by a government shutdown (while working for the DoD) That being said, at least the DoD, congress usually seems to keep the defense budget going since it is defense
