The choices we make are based on our feelings of safety. If she feels safe and confident enough to wear her hair as is, let her.
I think the other person's advice probably came from a place of scarcity, which may have been true for her.
"Playing the game" is never a guarantee anyway. But it would be silly to pretend that authenticity doesn't cost us something
I’d rather work where I’m accepted as I am.
I understand C1s point. We can only act as how safe we feel, if hair has been a historically negative experience for you I cant tell you “just be yourself” as it can be dismissive to personal experiences.
I do think it’s wrong to recommend a young person entering the workplace to start their journey with a mask on.
I interviewed for my current job in my natural puff and got the job, I wear my hair how I want and believe Black women shouldn’t let hair deter them. That is my opinion and I would t tell a young Black girl to do anything different
I’ve done both! Early in my career I would straighten my hair, and or wear in a bun. Did wear an my curly hair out in one interview! But the hiring manager was a Black Man so I felt comfortable and I was hired. For my current job I wore my hair in a bun. This is unfortunate but it depends on the culture of the company, and the hiring manager. But however I chose to wear my hair during the interview process I stood 10 toes down on it, hope this helps!

I always make sure to interview with my natural hair. I agree with the young girl and believe times are changing
I think natural hair doesn’t have the same negative connotation as it once did years ago. More and more women are wearing their hair natural and as long as her hair is “presentable” overall (fine and straight hair definitely has the ability to look unpresentable) I think she should be fine.
Hair is superficial. I would worry more about the mindset of an employer who would decide not to hire me based solely on my hair. Not saying to be unkempt, but appealing to Eurocentric standards should already be behind us.
When I was in business school, I had locs. As I was completing my final year and started to do interviews for full-time positions, I was advised to wear a wig on interviews. I said then what I believe now over 15 years later: if I can't even show up how I appear in real life at my place of work, I'm sure I can't try to bring my whole self to the job. If I wouldn't be hired for a position I'm qualified for because of how I wear my hair, it's probably a toxic workplace where I don't want to work.
Why would you want to work somewhere if they don't accept the way you wear your hair (which is the way you normally wear it) for an hour interview? They're going to see your hair 40+ hours a week in its natural state. I always find this conversation weird, and I guess a little old school, there was a time when this needed to occur because it really did mean getting a job or not, but we have SO many options and access to jobs now days, this shouldnt even be a topic of conversation. Natural hair doesn't mean unkept, plus it's the hair that grows out of my head.
Hi so is it wrong to tell the young lady to at least comb her hair and look well groomed for an interview? I’m sorry but looking like you just rolled out of bed for an interview is unacceptable to me. Not straighten, not permed, not curled just neat in its natural state. I realize that times are changing and the young generation are making great changes for us in diversity, but unfortunately they still make the rules and we’re just now getting a seat at the table and demanding to be heard. Natural hair is beautiful! But to go on an interview not bothering to comb it and fluff it back out is just too much and I have 1 son who rocks platinum blonde hair and my other son has braids so I’m all for being who you are. Just my opinion
Exactly- Wigs with weird /fake looking scalps and whatnot …generates no questions
Anti Blackness is real
In all things be wise. I am totally for natural hair in any form however the reality is we are judged by how we present ourselves. If the job requires a certain appearance like being a flight attendant etc. then be aware and don't be upset if they don't choose you. Do what you have to do until you can do what you want to do. Interviews require preparation...not just hair. Why would you show up at an interview for a company where everyone wears suits including clients wearing cut off jeans with holes and flip flops expecting them to hire you as you are? I just feel like it's a two way street and some folk go through a huge emotional reaction expecting a company that often has a set culture (good or bad) to somehow change for them. And the best company to be yourself is the one you create. This is not to go against the young lady's decision on her hair, but it's to say pick your battles and your environment. The reality is most people still have biases. I personally wouldn't give my interviewer any reason not to hire me. Again my person opinion.
Wise words D!
AP1 I thought that this was a forum for us to speak and not be judged, but that’s all you have done. You’re not listening, but ready to jump and condemn others for our opinions. You keep mentioning wigs and straight hair, could it be you’re biased against people who wear wigs, perms or braids? The only thing I have clearly said time after time is that WE are at a disadvantage and have to work harder, so we have to come correct on ALL forums and for clarification since u don’t seem to get it, I don’t care what style hair u wear WE have to get thru the door way harder than Karen.
