(29F here) $1500 will be very difficult to find in a safe neighborhood. If you can go up to $1800 or $2000, you’ll find better options. Also, do you have a car?
Your budget is way low
NE DC; NW is overpriced garbage.
H ST, NoMa are phenomenal and the central transit spots for the city; you can get anywhere usually in 20 minutes
Arlington is fairly sprawling and has multiple walkable neighborhoods and within your budget and a few minutes from DC by metro
$1500 is what I pay for an old 450 sq ft studio in Downtown Silver Spring. 5 min walk from metro and a 15-20 metro ride to downtown DC and U st. Bars, restaurants, movies all here. This is def an area where you can be in the mix if you want or just chill. If you want an updated apartment I’d increase your budget to $1800+
NW DC is the ideal location but can be relatively pricey. NE DC and some part of SW DC are fine too but avoid SE DE due to the high crime rate. Let me know if you need additional information.
What neighborhoods in those areas would you recommend?
H st, NoMa, Captil Hill.
ApartmentList is what I used to find my ideal setup. $1500 is tricky even for a studio in the city unless you're somewhere in southeast or a little off the beaten path.
If you're not picky and care more about location than luxury, State House in DuPont js cheaaaaap and right by everything. Decent sizes studios, just an *old* building.
I have a room available in Alexandria (about 15min drive outside dc) if you’re open to it and can do short term. Close to shops, parks, etc but best reached with a car. Dm if interested.
ALX is way further than 15min, especially with traffic …
I just moved to DC from NYC and the most comparable areas that I found were Logan Circle / AdMo.
Rosslyn has some cheap studios if you're OK with really old buildings. 1 metro stop away from Foggy Bottom.
If you’re thinking NW Glover park-cathedral heights-Cleveland park areas are more affordable and still very safe and connected. I lived in the area 7 years and my most recent (remodeled, wood floors, washer dryer, new appliances) studio was$1550
Capitol Hill is full of people your age and Pennsylvania Ave./Barracks Row on the SE side has lots of great bars & restaurants, as does the H Street corridor on the NE side. Also, there are some older co-op buildings in SW right near the waterfront where you might be able to find a decent studio or jr. 1-BR rental (Tiber Island is the one that comes to mind but there are others in the same general area).
