Got a random email from a supposed Amazon recruiter for a SDE position (which is not at all a fit). The email is amazon.com domain and there are no red flags in the body but it doesn't feel like an Amazon recruiter due to the tacky signature, etc. Has anyone seen this kind of cold-calling from FAANG recruiter?

Why not a real bike ?
Oh, I have several road and mountain bikes, but live in Houston and like to spin indoors when it's +100F outside. I have a diamondback spin bike now, but am not necessarily driven to ride it when I land late on Thursdays... the on-demand live classes on the peloton are a game changer...
I do, but I live in Cleveland so the outdoor season is minimal. Having the peloton inside my house literally eliminates any excuse for not working out. You can get a great workout in and get ready to do something all under an hour. I'm also a hyper competitive formal college athlete so the competition part of the peloton is great for me.
Wow M1... thanks for the research! Lots of good points... in going to look into options. I was just so excited after my workout I wasn't thinking straight... I almost always do months of research before I make a purchase like this one!
I personally would have spent that on an actual bike, but welcome to "cycling."
You could just get a RAM mount for the handlebars of your diamondback spin bike, attach your iPad or iPhone to it, and run Peloton for iOS, to get the classes...
I thought about it, but what I liked was the competitive aspect... the fact that you're racing against everyone else and can get into grudge matches. Also like that it's watt output based and not speed...
Then no need for the physical bike (which is overpriced for a The tyspin bike and only comes with a 1-year warranty)
UGH. eff you Fishbowl for not allowing edits...
Was trying to say "no need for physical peloton bike (which only has 1-year warranty and is a bit overpriced for the style of spin bike it is)
I guess I should do some research. Are you saying you can download the app and plug your own bike into sensors that report out to the group?
Hmmm. Good question.
In the app there is a "Metrics" ride type... and according to their site it describes this as "measure the effectiveness of your ride using defined resistance, cadence and energizing music to push yourself to achieve your goals. Compete with riders from all over the country as you climb your way to the top of the leaderboard."
However, there is no mention of how these metrics (like resistance and cadence) are measured / captured / enforced in the app...
Fishbowl can edit. Hold your comment with ur finger for a few seconds and release
PwC1, I used to be able to, if no one had replied after me yet and I was within 30 seconds to a minute of posting, by doing what you're describing. Can't anymore... not sure if they pushed an update out that I have and you don't?
OP, since they have a 30-day guarantee, I still think I'd try out the app... maybe do a morning ride with the actual bike, and do an evening ride with your diamondback plus the app... see if it's really worth the extra $$$... the app's only like $12 a month (with a 14-day free trial that you could coincide with the arrival of your peloton cycle to do a comparison test between the two). I think you still have to pay a $39.99 monthly sub after the first year with the cycle... just seems like A LOT of money for the experience of a spin bike...
How did you get it at half price?
Okay, OP... did a little more digging.
What about using ANT+ / BLE setup (like Garmin Edge) on your Diamondback... you could certainly rig up an ANT+ cadence sensor onto the Diamondback, if you haven't already, and there are ways to integrate power meters (P1 pedals, for instance). Of course, this assumes the diamondback you have doesn't already have these things built-in.
If you could get cadence and power results from Ant+ / BLE compatible device, you could upload into Strava... this would be considered a stationary activity, and you'd have to do some research to confirm, but they might have stationary activity leaderboards (e.g. power generated at a certain cadence, perhaps?)
They also offer CTS videos and indoor training plans (not sure how they compare to the Peloton videos / classes).
You could also get a virtual trainer that you could connect to one of your road bikes, that will simulate any of Strava's mapped segments... something like this... https://gearjunkie.com/strava-indoors-bike-training-apps
That thing costs half as much as the peloton. Perhaps with your Cathy Cash and health subsidy you could get it for free, and be out of pocket nothing?
To me, personally, something that I could use indoors that would connect to Strava, since I use it on my outdoor rides as well would be more appealing than using one platform indoors and one outdoors. Plus, if you're paying for a subscription to a service (Peloton App, Peloton cycle after 1 year, Strava premium), why not pay one fee for one app that can handle indoors and outdoors? Also Strava premium is cheaper than both peloton app subscription and peloton bike (sub after 1 year)... $7.99 / mo (or $59/yr) for Strava premium... versus $12.99 for peloton iOS app, vs $39.99/mo for peloton cycle after 1 year has passed from purchase.
Just food for thought.
OP: I bought the peloton. You won't regret it. Extremely easy to set up and continue to use. Will be a great purchase.
D1, out of curiosity, do you also own a road bike / cycle outdoors?
I cycle on the weekends at home (currently riding a Trek Domane SL 6). Curious as to how the experience compares (also directed at OP since they mentioned having road bikes). I use the stationary bikes at the hotel but unless I bring my kindle or they have a TV, I can't stay on them long - get bored... I really have never been able to get into spin bikes either unless there is a TV nearby. I've done a "free trial" Flywheel class before and it was okay but kind of strange, to be honest... the music and the dark setting, I dunno.
Maybe what I'm missing is the visual stimulation of changing scenery and the interaction with the bike shifting gears as the grade of the road changes?
