Venting. Interviewing while managing a full-time job and a 2 year old has sent me on the path to burnout. There are so many opportunities nowadays that I would’ve loved 10 years ago. But now with a mortgage, toddler, and spouse working FT while earning his masters, I just CANNOT bring myself to join a hip, new shop with no project managers or stability. I have talent to give, and nowhere to put it. Now at the point of considering going freelance, which I never planned on.

I’m on the consulting side (FDD) and I’m curious if there are PE firms with good WLB. I’m happy with my pay, growth, and hours. PE interests me but I don’t understand why anyone would want to consistently work 65+ hours a week every week. What’s the appeal? Making double the pay? What’s the exit plan?

Advice Request: Started my career litigating. Switched to niche transactions (so about half and half at this point). After you are stealth laid off, other than job search, what do you do? I assume they won’t give you work and even if they do, you can politely decline? How do you feel about you are not progressing anymore and seeing other people progressing in their career? I have no intention to make partner, but still feel a bit stuck not doing that much.

Had my annual review Friday (first year with the company). Boss awarded a 3% raise though she said my review was “90% positive.” Worth adding I got a 3% sign on bonus last year, so I’m basically at 0% raise. Nobody under me has gotten less than a 7% raise in the past year. Considering promotions + counter offers as well, it goes as high as 25%. I don’t feel a 3% raise matches a “90% positive” review and plan to bring up the cognitive dissonance I’m feeling. Any other tips or advice to add?
