Chateaux in Bordeaux generally make more than one wine. There’s the 1st wine or “grand vin” - that’s the flagship wine. Then there’s the 2nd wine, from grapes not good enough to make it into the first wine (there’s often more Merlot as well, so they’re ready for drinking earlier). Some estates, like Margaux and Latour, actually make a 3rd wine from grapes not good enough to make it into the 2nd wine. What you’ve got here is the 3rd wine, which they refer to somewhat deceptively as “Margaux de Chateau Margaux.” So I’m afraid you haven’t just found the deal of the century, but it should be an enjoyable wine nonetheless.
The 2nd wine is called Pavillon Rouge. Perhaps unsurprisingly, since the 3rd wine was introduced in 2009 Pavillon Rouge got much better and in some vintages it’s as good as the Grand Vin was in some vintages of the 80s and 90s. We tasted the 2010 Pavillon Rouge at the chateau in September and I preferred it to the 2006 Grand Vin. You can find one on wine-searcher.com
Not to burst your bubble, but seems like it's fairly priced. Hope it's still great!
4.4 is a great rating on Vivino, so you should still be happy with the purchase and be in for a delicious wine from a top producer!!
La Grande Epicerie is wonderful
True. Could spend hours in there.
He probably thought he had this one
