Honestly none of your PE friends are working less hours than you.
And the growth ones if they joined recently are getting worthless carry in funds that will be perennial underperformers given the market.
If you’re happy at Bain stay - in these roles it’s all sort of the same BS in different flavors.
+1
Precisely that: "I wake up every day excited about my job. Do you?"
Hi there! People ask me this all the time as I near 4 years at Bain. I tell them how happy I am, and that usually ends the convo.
They say “you’ve drank the kool-aid, huh?”
And I go, “yes, I’m really enjoying helping my current client solve X problem or supervising and mentoring two people or how fun everyone is to be around.”
Most of the time by the time I’m done gushing about how much I like the place, they’re ready to change the subject lol. If your friends really care that much about how much YOU make, they’re not your friends.
I’ll play the long game - I can’t really leave rn anyway
I can’t leave my family
But in all seriousness, congrats - I know it’s hard for people to find something they really like to do. I’m just a baby in the consulting world coming from industry, but so far I have the same feeling. Hope it doesn’t go away.

Find new friends .
"Hey, I'm glad you're happy. I am, too."
New topic.
If they keep going, you can add something like:
"We can do different t things and both be content, simultaneously. These can co-exist because people get excited about, and by, different things."
Don't engage further. Period.
You don't owe any explanation. But I salute you for not seeking to be antagonistic.
Simple fact is your life and choices are not their business.
If you need to walk away from the convo, do that.
If you need to say, "Bro, butt out." Do that.
And congrats!!!
In 4 years at Bain and feel the same. I just say “I love the people I work with. The work is hard but they make it fun and I feel so supported. I don’t think I’d have that everywhere”
Tell them to circle back in 6-12 months. They just aren’t pitching the exit to you at the right time
This right here is the right answer.
If they kept pestering then I’d probably just say yep you’re right and change the subject. Sometimes it’s just not worth the effort when others think they know best.
“I’m actually excited to go to work every day. Doesn’t get much better than that! Will hit you up if that changes though, thanks man”
If they kept pestering then I’d probably just say yep you’re right and change the subject. Sometimes it’s just not worth the effort when others think they know best.
Google trauma bonding
Some of this, much more of things other than this. Like I said, job is hard, noone denies that, so important to find other things to motivate you
