Hello. I came to realize that 100% of my work/social problems stemmed from my drinking. By not drinking, I will have much healthier relationships. Day 3, I’m having trouble staying asleep, any tips?

The big book of AA puts me asleep. Congrats on day 3, it does get better. You’re doing the right thing!

Exercise vigorously during the day. Avoid screens and bright white light at night

This. Cut back on caffeine as well. Theanine also helps and you can find at any drug store.

It took me a few weeks to regulate to sober sleeping. Just as it had takin a few years to regulate to non-sober sleeping. After a week or three your sleep will improve and you will get more on a consistent schedule.

like

This was the case for me earlier this year. The first day was the hardest and it generally got better every day after as measured via my watch.

The 3 “miserable” weeks of sleeping was actually better quality than normal. Less hours, but better quality. Eventually those two numbers came back together.

It’s unfortunately just one of those things that took time for me. Running helped take the edge off.

2+ years in and I still haven’t figured out the sleep part. Things that DEFINITELY don’t help:
- Caffeine late in the day
- Sugar at night
- Too much water before bed
- Scrolling through social media before bed

Things that I’ve experimented with recently that seem to help a little:
- Stick to a bedtime routine (go to bed at same time, do the same thing each night)
- Adding electrolytes to the water I drink (aids with absorption and hydration)
- Meditation before bed (even 5 min helps)
- Don’t leave dirty dishes in the sink (clean home = clean mind)
- Call into a Zoom AA meeting everyday.

Melatonin and a sleep mask. Hot bath or shower. Try to take a nap during the day if really tired. The brain is rewiring and healing so while it’s tough, it means good things happening.

Get to a doctor, and get to meetings. Often people have addictions to cover other issues, prescribed medication and therapy can help with this.

Well I recently told a guy I have been seeing I have HSV-2. We have not yet been physical but it’s been heading that direction. Man I hate this part - waiting to see what his response will be after he researches and talks to his doctor. I’m on daily meds which help reduce transmission risk. You’d think that since HSV-2 affects 20% of Americans and likely a higher % of gay men, there would be less taboo but it’s hardly ever talked about. Anyone else in my shoes? Or had it disclosed to them?

So my fiancé and I are having a microwedding in Rocky Mountain National Park next year, and we’re working with an elopement planner.
She sent over a sample ceremony (intro, sweet poems + passages to be read, and example vows), and we read through it last night. I was reading it out loud while my fiancé made dinner, and it just hit me that this is really happening. I’m just really happy that I found someone who is willing to take a vow to spend his life with me and I’m so excited for that day :)

Genuinely curious: how often do you feel truly happy/enthusiastic in your daily life? What exactly makes you happy? I hesitate to self diagnose w “high functioning depression” but I have all the hallmarks. I have no interest in previous hobbies; picked up new ones & got bored very quickly; and though I’m still productive in my job, have friends/a SO—I don’t remember truly feeling happy/excited in a long time. I met therapists who asked me if I think others feel happy/excited all the time(cont

Anyone else here realized they have some alcohol moderation issues? I graduated college within the past 1.5 yrs and my friends are still in the heavy weekend drinking phase. I have realized I need to cut my drinking way down. I don’t drink every day and won’t crave a drink when I’m sober but it’s like once I start I don’t typically stop. I only drink about 2 times a week, but it’s the volume of drinks that’s the issue. I’m not ready to quit - just cut down a lot! Tips/advice appreciated! TIA :)

Just signed the outside employment form in KPMG onboarding system. I actually wanted to start dabbling in creative writing as a potentially monetizable hobby, but I'm guessing this may pose issues.

Definitely interested in the "exception from this policy may be requested if provision of non-professional services doesn't interfere with one's duties of causes conflict of interest" clause, though. Has anyone been able to get one of those before?

So, recently got phished while staying at Marriott Peachtree Hotel in ATL. Received call to my room at 12:30 am from the “GM” who knew my name (and room number obviously). Didn’t feel right and the night manager said the GM called and told him I would likely come down upset. He then said the issue was resolved and dismissed the situation. Sure enough, it was fraud and charges began to come in. I received 105k points but feel it should be more. What amount of points have you received and what’s?

If you're looking for inspirational films about addiction I highly recommend The Resurrection of Jake the Snake Roberts. It's a documentary about the wrestler who had about as bad an addiction problem as you can imagine. It goes through his problems, despair, but also shows his road to recovery through platonic love, support, and he finds redemption. It's great for anyone like me that tried and failed to get sober for years. I have over a year now for the first time.

After 3 years, the therapist disclosed that she’s in the program. I had wondered often about the source of her knowledge of the steps. Still I would’ve preferred her to remain anonymous in this regard. Now I keep wondering about whether I’ll see her at a meeting and what her story is. So odd. So self centered of me.

Went for a pre-employment drug test yesterday. They never asked me if I was on any medications. I had to ask them and was told "oh yeah, just put any you may think make a difference in this text box." I put Xanax, Flexeril, and gabapentin. All of which are prescribed and used as directed. Now I'm terrified that I should have put ALL my meds, to including my psych meds. I've been sober over 12 years and never touched drugs (just booze) but I'm having a full blown panic attack.

I’m through the worst of it now but any advice? Thought about rehab but can’t stop work. This is probably my 9th time trying to go sober during the pandemic. I live alone so the isolation with the pandemic has extremely escalated my usage to the point of about a bottle of a day on weekdays

my sister died this morning. I posted about her in a past post. Alcohol addiction, liver failure and then it taxed the kidneys too much, she went into cardiac arrest at 9 am and they could not save her. She was 51. Sad day for sure. Had a really bad day 😞 I don’t know why I keep doing this to myself. Things will be going well and then out of nowhere I get blackout drunk. I am tired of feeling sick and anxious from drinking. I don’t really even want to drink sometimes but do it anyway. Blacked out last night, and still feel sick now. I’ve never shared with anyone that I have this problem, until I found this message board. I have so much anxiety that I won’t be able to get this under control. I feel isolated and sad.

I’m sober curious. I’m also about to help a new non-alcoholic spirit company with their launch.
I have a question for people in recovery. If a brand were to contend that sobriety is a spectrum, or allow for that to a least be part of the conversation, how does that make you feel? Are other brands doing a good job of being inclusive of people who are truly sober?
(I get that NA drinks / spirits can be triggering for people in recovery)
Thank you.
