If you’re white like me it’s so important to realize that we were raised in a society where institutionalized racism is normalized, and we were born with privilege. You can’t choose the color of your skin, but you can choose to put ego aside and reflect on why this isn’t happening to me, and be vocal about being anti-racist.

We had a girl who found out she was going to get fired bc she saw her job posted on LinkedIn. It's a thing and you're not the first to be put in that position. It's refreshing to see that you care.
Why do you feel guilty? You're doing nothing wrong, let alone morally wrong. First, you aren't the one making the decision to let this person go. Second, you nor your boss nor your company owe it to this person to let them continue performing poorly and they're likely a detriment to their team.
The only reason I wouldn't agree with this is if this person has never been trained or corrected on whatever they're doing wrong with the chance to correct it and this is coming out of left field.
Are there areas you could help them to learn to perform better in the interim? You may not be able to save them at their current role, but you can potentially help set them up to perform better in their next job (without leading on to what's unfortunately coming).
Speaking from experience, there is nothing more demoralizing than knowing the people you actively are working with are transitioning you off without outrightly saying it. This person must know at some level. The best you can do is try and help them retain whatever dignity they can in the process. When I knew I was going to be fired (didn't know exactly what day, but that it was coming), I stayed late one night to clean out my desk and take my things home so that when it did happen, I could exit quietly without drawing attention to myself. I was fired the following Monday morning.
I appreciate this honesty and this person is underperforming. So I think you're right. Perhaps it's just a first timers type of uneasiness in my stomach. I just feel that in the same position as this employee, I would be very hurt by something similar so that's where I'm struggling. But I think you're right!
Agreed - being in this position doesn't feel good. But it's not your doing. Plus, management clearly values you and has a lot of trust in your opinion. That's a silver lining.
