Firing someone expecting to go on paternity leave would be a HR nightmare. If anything they should be less likely to lay off. This is provided employer is big and has a reputation to uphold. Small employers probably won’t care.

The feigned ignorance is strange.
First of all Congrats!
2nd generally I think its best to let HR know 2-3 months left in the pregnancy (it's what we did)
Best of luck!
When we were pregnant we wanted to tell at month 6/7. Was earlier due to a weird coincidence but later would have felt better.
I second the HR nightmare. Would just wait a little until you are further along, and especially not before the holidays
Is it common to say we’re pregnant?

We focus on nitpicking posts but get offended when partner does that to our decks.
If he’s established within the firm I would say tell them early. They wouldn’t want to risk it seeming like they included him in any layoffs BECAUSE of the paternity. Even if they can prove it wasn’t it would be expensive and potentially dangerous to their brand even to defend the claims

Depends on the firm. If this was Deloitte, I would tell you he should only worry if his performance was poor or significantly below utilization. Parenting leave won’t be a reason for worry.
Agree, but I had the sense this wasn't a Big4 firm
If he’s a high performer, I don’t think he has anything to worry about. I took all 16 weeks with my first and it was the best thing I did. If he’s concerned, he should talk to a SM or Partner he is close to and get their thoughts.
After i got good performance review I immediately informed my manager about parental leave and saved the copy of good performance review email on my personal inbox.
Going on leave is a good way to evade the layoffs.
My sister worked in HR and gave the advice to speak up EARLY about parental leave needs as then you’re protected due to optics of it being discrimination
Is it better yo start by informing manager or HR?
