Love that you started this! I have a 16 (girl), 12 (girl), and 11 (boy) year old...my 16 yo is great but the middle school years were rough and I'm now going through it with the 12 yo. The attitudes are unbelievable and you can only take electronics away so much!! I am crystal clear on my expectations and I try to be as consistent as possible but I'm at a loss on consequences that hit home. The other thing I'm struggling with is the identity crisis...my 12 yo thinks she is misgendered and while I try to be understanding and supportive, I feel like this is a phase to fit in because it is constantly in their faces. She has never exhibited signs of this until the last year and I don't want her doing something she's going to regret in a couple years!
Yikes. How do the kids get these ideas…is school introducing these topics to them?
OP - oh yes, I have had her meeting with a therapist once/week for the last year and she really enjoys it. It is SO tough but my plan for now is to just ride it out and love and support her. Other than cutting her hair short, she understands my stance and that she is way too young to make any major life altering decisions so for the time being, we're coasting. But the attitude is atrocious!!! One moment they love you and want hugs and the next you get this look that could kill. It's oh so much fun 🤣

Makes sense. What else can you do than wait and watch? It all seems so long and there’s no “switch” that will turn them into angels 😃

Oh that’s rough! I would be confused on what to do in that situation. Have you consulted with a professional? I always struggle to tell the difference between a passing phase, something more permanent and a clinical problem that needs diagnosis/attention (and how to manage in each scenario)
