We’re down three associates and somehow the workload didn’t shrink at all. It just redistributed itself onto the rest of us. How do you push back without sounding like you can’t handle the work?

Why would you expect the workload to shrink, lol?

If you’re on pace for say, 2.1k hours, I’d frame it as something along the lines of “i’m caught-up on xyz, and I expect I can turn to this on xxx date. Please lmk if that timeline works”

They’ll get the hint.

You need to hire additional paralegals to help out with the workload

Get the resumes of a few of your friends who you would like to work with and present them to the partners. “Hey I know we are down three bodies. This guy is great. Any interest in talking to him?”

If you’re at 120%+ utilization multiple months in a row then it’s time to start saying no. The partners can do the work themselves, hire someone new, or tell the clients no. Not your problem to solve.

How are 1st year litigation associates dealing with WFH? I’ve been having terrible anxiety/panic attacks, and pretty sure my billables wont exceed 110 for April. I’ve been super stressed about it and don’t know how to move on to May with the proper mindset to make up for as much time missed as possible. CA courts are still closed, and I’m worried I won’t be able to exceed (or even meet) my May goal after April.

Billables are low this month. Like I have 65 billable hours in so far. I’ve messaged partners over the last week to try and get more cases but there are tons of new associates who were just onboarded and were at a low point for business. I’m freaking out

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.
